Spain Real borrowed Joselu from Espanyol, one of three teams relegated in La Liga 2022-2023, as an alternative to the recently departed striker Karim Benzema.
On June 18, Real President Florentino Perez confirmed that the loan deal for Joselu - the second new signing after midfielder Jude Bellingham - would soon be completed. He also affirmed that Real would not make any more contracts this month.
According to Marca , this is a cost-effective decision for Real. The Bernabeu team will not have to spend as much money as when Benzema was still there, or buy a top striker.

Joselu came through the Celta Vigo academy and joined Real Madrid B in 2010. The 33-year-old striker scored 40 goals in 73 games for Real Madrid B and two goals in two games for the first team. Between 2012 and 2022, Joselu played for Hoffenheim, Frankfurt, Hannover, Stoke City, Deportivo, Newcastle and Alaves.
In the 2022-2023 season, for Espanyol, Joselu scored 16 goals in 33 La Liga matches and 17 goals in 37 matches in all competitions. He scored in both matches Espanyol lost 1-3 to Real. In the race for the La Liga Golden Boot, the 33-year-old striker ranked third, behind only Robert Lewandowski (23 goals) and Benzema (19). However, Espanyol still could not escape the second-to-last position and were relegated.
In early June, Benzema terminated his contract with Real a year early, to move to play for Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. According to British media, Real then targeted Harry Kane. The 29-year-old striker impressed with a record of 280 goals in 435 matches for Tottenham, including 213 goals in the Premier League. However, this deal is unlikely to be successful, due to the English team's lack of goodwill.
Real Madrid's number one transfer target Kylian Mbappe has sent a letter to PSG not to activate the contract extension clause until 2025. Therefore, the French star can leave in June 2024 as a free transfer. However, he still affirms that he wants to play for PSG until the end of his contract, instead of leaving this summer.
