Atletico Madrid have the home advantage of the Metropolitano Stadium when they host Real Madrid in the 1/8 round of the King's Cup, but the challenge for coach Simeone is huge as the away team is in good form this season. Recently, Real Madrid defeated Barcelona to win the Spanish Super Cup.
However, Atletico won after 120 minutes of effective play. Although Simeone's team did not have a clear advantage over their opponents in terms of statistics, they were particularly effective in scoring goals. Taking the lead twice in 90 minutes and scoring two decisive goals in 30 minutes of extra time helped Atletico reach the quarter-finals.

Real Madrid played better than the home team after the opening whistle. In the 5th minute, Bellingham handled the ball skillfully in the home team's penalty area and then shot from close range, hitting the crossbar and bouncing out. The away team created clear scoring opportunities but could not become the team to open the score of the match.
The home team took the lead in the 39th minute thanks to Lino's opening goal, Rudiger was at fault for the away team's goal when he headed the ball back as if to assist his opponent. However, Atletico's lead only lasted 7 minutes. In the 45+1 minute, Oblak scored an own goal, helping Real Madrid equalize 1-1 before entering the break.
Morata's strike put Atletico ahead for the second time 12 minutes into the second half. Once again the visitors' defence was lethargic, allowing the visitors to score. However, Real Madrid did not give up. Ancelotti's side fought back strongly after falling behind and found the equaliser in the 82nd minute, through Joselu.

The two teams drew 2-2 after 90 minutes of official play and had to play extra time. Atletico continued to show their scoring instinct in this match, Griezmann put the home team 3-2 ahead in the 100th minute after a dribble and a neat finish from a tight angle. With the goal to take the lead, Atletico retreated to play defensive counter-attack.
It seemed that Real Madrid would have a third equalizer against Atletico when Ceballos shook the home team's net in the 110th minute. The Spanish midfielder rushed in to shoot after a block by goalkeeper Oblak, but VAR determined that the previous shot of the away team, Bellingham, was offside so the goal was not recognized.

While rushing forward to attack to find an equalizer, Real Madrid were hit by a counter-attack in the 119th minute. The home team scored the fourth goal thanks to Riquelme, thereby ending the match with a score of 4-2 and winning a ticket to the quarter-finals.
