Real keeps Vinicius with billion dollar clause

Spain To avoid the risk of losing Vinicius, Real Madrid inserted a release clause worth more than one billion USD into the new contract signed with Brazilian striker Vinicius.

According to Spanish newspaper AS , the two sides have been negotiating an extension since last year and reached an agreement a few months ago. But Real only announced the new contract with Vinicius until June 2027 on October 31. The contract's release clause is worth one billion euros, equivalent to $1.05 billion.

President Florentino Perez attended and took photos with Vinicius during the signing ceremony of the new contract at the Valdebebas headquarters. Relatives of the Brazilian striker were also present at this private event.

According to AS , after Vinicius, Real will include a similar release clause of more than 1 billion USD when negotiating extensions with central defender Eder Militao, midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde and striker Rodrygo. Of which, Militao and Rodrygo currently have contracts until June 2025, while Valverde and Camavinga's contracts expire in July 2027.

"If successful, Real's backbone for the next decade will be guaranteed," AS commented on the royal team's plan.

The announcement of Vinicius' extension came a day after the 2023 Ballon d'Or gala, where the 23-year-old forward finished sixth in the race for the 2023 Ballon d'Or and won the Socrates Prize for his contributions in fighting social inequality in Brazil.

"I'm really happy to win this award and to represent the children of the favelas of Brazil," Vinicius said at the ceremony in Paris, France. "They don't have many opportunities but I can give them some. This is really important to me, my family and the people who work to make this happen. I want to continue helping children to make sure they have the opportunity to decide their own future."

Vinicius joined Real Madrid in July 2018 at the age of 18 and made his debut for Real Madrid Castilla on August 26. After a difficult start, the Brazilian forward has matured significantly and is now a mainstay of the first team. In the past six seasons, he has scored 63 goals in 235 games, winning nine titles including two La Liga, one Copa del Rey, two Spanish Super Cups, one Champions League, one European Super Cup and two Club World Cups.

In terms of individual awards, Vinicius was named the best young player of the 2021-2022 Champions League season, and was twice included in the best squad of the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 Champions League seasons, and twice included in the best squad of La Liga seasons 2021-2022 and 2022-2023.

Vinicius' future at the Bernabeu has been in doubt after he was repeatedly subjected to racist abuse in La Liga matches. The most recent incident was in the match against Sevilla on October 21, when several home fans were sent off for allegedly racially abusing Vinicius. La Liga has since investigated the allegations of racism against the Brazilian striker during El Clasico.
