Ms. Le Thi Hong My, a farmer member of Quang Thanh village, Dien Hoa commune, Dien Khanh district (Khanh Hoa province) boldly planted Trang Nong coriander - a familiar spice vegetable on her family's rice fields.
In order to change the crop structure on rice fields to increase income, this Summer - Fall crop, Ms. Le Thi Hong My, a farmer member of Quang Thanh village, Dien Hoa commune, Dien Khanh district, Khanh Hoa province, boldly invested in planting Trang Nong coriander on her family's rice fields.
With an area of over 1,500m2 , from plowing, rowing, roofing, fertilizing, spraying to hiring workers to plant, care for, and harvest coriander, Ms. My has invested more than 25 million VND.
In the Summer - Fall 2019 season, the weather was hot and dry for a long time, other crops such as cucumber, chili, bitter melon were poorly developed, giving low yield.
On the contrary, in rice fields, despite the prolonged heat, coriander still grows well and is less susceptible to pests and diseases.
Coriander is a shade-loving herb so it needs to be shaded, but in return this vegetable provides a fairly stable income. Coriander can be grown under the garden canopy, however this method of planting makes the coriander grow poorly due to competition for nutrients.
From the day of sowing coriander seeds, it takes 4 months to harvest the first crop of coriander, then every 30 days to harvest the next crop, on average Ms. My harvests 1.5 tons/crop.
Like that, coriander is harvested continuously for 5 months, then the roots are removed. The estimated average income per crop is about 10 million VND, quite high compared to growing rice on the same area.
The model of growing coriander - a familiar spice vegetable in rice fields - brings better income to Ms. My, a member and farmer in Quang Thanh village, Dien Hoa commune, Dien Khanh district, Khanh Hoa province.
Ms. My said that growing coriander is not too hard, if the price of coriander is high, growing it will bring quite a profit. Currently, the price of coriander on the market is 13,000 - 14,000 VND/kg, in the summer, coriander is very attractive, the price is pushed up to 27,000 - 28,000 VND/kg, then the price decreases but still maintains at 13,000 VND.
If the soil is good, growing coriander can yield 8 harvests, but if the soil is bad, it can only yield 5-6 harvests.
Cilantro growers must completely destroy the land for 2 years to plant new seedlings, and only plant cilantro again after a while because if the soil is familiar, the cilantro will grow poorly and productivity will decrease.
In the past, coriander growers had to work hard because after harvesting they had to bring the crop to the market to sell, but now there are traders who come to the fields to buy it.
Ms. My shared: The coriander variety of Trang Nong Company has a short growing time, is easy to grow, and is suitable for local soil conditions.
Coriander grows well, bears many fruits, has few pests and diseases, and gives quite high yield.
Coriander has many uses. It is a precious plant that can be used as both a spice (stimulating appetite) and a medicinal herb (used to treat runny nose, chest pain, digestive disorders, enteritis, bad breath, and blood sugar reduction, etc.), so it is very easy to find in the market.
Producing one rice crop and one color crop in the direction of converting suitable crops to increase farmers' income, growing coriander (cilantro) one crop on rice land can also be considered a suitable direction to help farmers increase income and stabilize their lives.
