Due to the influence of heavy rain, the amount of Da Lat chrysanthemums brought to Ho Chi Minh City this year is not as much as the same period in previous years.
Slow purchasing power, sellers lower prices of flowers and fruits at the end of the day
According to records on the afternoon of August 18 (full moon day of the seventh lunar month), at Go Vap market (Go Vap district), Thanh Da market (Binh Thanh district)... the main types of flowers for offering on the full moon day of the seventh lunar month such as chrysanthemums, lilies; fruits such as grapefruit branches, watermelons... are still abundant at the stalls, the selling price has increased slightly compared to normal, some vendors even reduced the price of flowers.
Importing twice as many chrysanthemums as on the full moon day of normal months, Ms. Ngo Thanh Lan, a trader at Thanh Da market (Binh Thanh), said that the price of flowers sold during the 3 peak days of the full moon day of July is commonly 35,000 - 50,000 VND/bunch of 10 net chrysanthemums, 20,000 - 30,000 VND/bunch of 5 regular chrysanthemums.
According to Ms. Lan, this price increased by about 20 - 30% compared to normal days but lower than the same period in previous years.

"Demand is spread evenly over the three peak days and has not increased as dramatically as sellers expected, so flower prices are still acceptable. With the amount of flowers in stock, I am reducing prices to sell on the last day," said Ms. Lan.
Similarly, the prices of less consumed flowers such as lilies and gladiolus at many retail markets have only increased slightly compared to normal, with gladiolus at 45,000 - 55,000 VND/bunch of 10 plants, lilies at 120,000 - 140,000 VND/bunch of 5 plants, and gerberas at 40,000 - 45,000 VND/bunch of 20 flowers in various colors.
Meanwhile, due to relatively abundant supply, although demand increased more than usual, the selling prices of many types of fruit did not increase as shockingly as many retailers had calculated.
Specifically, on the occasion of the full moon of July, at many retail markets and supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City, the price of grapefruit with branches sold at retail markets and supermarkets is at 55,000 - 75,000 VND/kg, 35,000 - 55,000 VND/kg for type 2, watermelon 17,000 - 20,000 VND/kg, dragon fruit 14,000 - 25,000 VND/kg...

Thanks to reduced supply, chrysanthemums do not have to be heavily discounted or dumped.
Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online on August 18, Mr. Ly Phu Qui, director of Dam Sen flower market (HCMC), said that the amount of flowers imported during the 3 peak days of the 15th day of the 7th lunar month reached 16 - 17 trucks/day (each truck had 250 boxes, each box had 150 bunches), of which 80 - 85% were chrysanthemums.
According to Mr. Qui, the above amount is double compared to normal days but much lower than the full moon of July every year (full moon every year can bring 25 - 30 flower cars per day).
Although the quantity is not as much as in previous years, Mr. Qui said that the wholesale price at the market this year did not increase too much, even only equal to the full moon of normal months.
Accordingly, the flower prices during the 3 peak days are 21,000 - 24,000 VND/bunch of 10 flowers, 10,000 VND/bunch of 5 flowers, 100,000 - 105,000 VND/bunch of 5 flowers, 30,000 - 34,000 VND/bunch of 10 flowers...

"Demand for flowers this time of year has clearly decreased compared to the same period in previous years. Therefore, even though the supply is low, there is still no shortage and the selling price has not increased dramatically," Mr. Qui explained.
According to many traders, chrysanthemums in Da Lat (Lam Dong) are grown by farmers to sell on the full moon day of the seventh lunar month, but this year they bloomed late due to heavy rain, leading to a lower supply than expected.
However, thanks to this reduction, many sellers can avoid having to dump excess inventory, or having to slash prices on the last day when purchasing power is slower than expected.
With chrysanthemums not blooming on this full moon day, many traders believe that the supply of chrysanthemums of all kinds will remain stable for the next 15-20 days.
