As reported by the People's Deputies Newspaper, this morning, September 15, the 9th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians with the theme "The role of youth in promoting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals through digital transformation and innovation" hosted by the Vietnamese National Assembly officially opened at the My Dinh National Convention Center, Hanoi.
At the opening ceremony, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue delivered an important speech. Then, speaking at the opening ceremony, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Duarte Pacheco expressed his honor to be present at the Conference, and at the same time, sincerely thanked the Vietnamese National Assembly and National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue for giving the delegates attending the Conference a very warm welcome, and thanked Vietnam for its commitments demonstrated through its meticulous preparations for the organization of the Conference.
Recalling the success of the 132nd IPU Assembly held in Vietnam in 2015, the IPU President affirmed that the IPU was delighted to choose Hanoi - a city with a long history and a bright future for its people - to host the 9th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians, an important event for young parliamentarians worldwide, who represent the world's future generations and our future leaders.
The IPU President stated that at this Conference, young parliamentarians around the world will focus on discussing development strategies for countries, the world and people both now and in the future. This is the right time to discuss these issues. What we decide today will greatly affect the future.
Sharing the importance of innovation, changes to bring better values, and the role of youth, the IPU President also said that we seem to be lacking attention and concern for these important factors.

"Therefore, we must further enhance the role of young people. The Vietnamese National Assembly is setting an example for us in these efforts. The Vietnamese National Assembly has a very high proportion of young parliamentarians. This means that Vietnam not only talks but also turns words into actions, creating space for young parliamentarians to enhance their role," the IPU President emphasized.
The IPU President also asked young people and young parliamentarians to speak up so that parliaments and the IPU know what can be done to help young people participate more actively in political life. “The worst thing is that young people seem to be avoiding political activities. Therefore, we must help them have space to participate in the decision-making process, what they want for their future,” said the IPU President.
Noting that we are currently facing challenges all over the world, the IPU President agreed with the sharing of National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue in his opening speech at the Conference about how we have learned many things through the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The pandemic has shown us that our world is really small. And so we must work together to respond to the challenges facing humanity. This does not discriminate between rich and poor countries, or any other factor. Only by working together can we respond to such challenges and continue to respond to similar challenges in the future to the benefit of all,” he said.
Referring to the fact that the roadmap for implementing the sustainable development goals and the 2030 agenda for sustainable development is being delayed, the IPU President emphasized that we must move faster to achieve as many of the sustainable development goals as possible by the 2030 deadline.
In that process, the IPU President said that digital transformation, technology and innovation are extremely important factors, without which sustainable development is impossible. Young parliamentarians are very familiar with today's digital world. Therefore, at the Conference, we also need to discuss what we will do, what needs to change, what needs to be innovated in parliaments to bring about the real participation of young people in political activities and in parliaments.

Emphasizing that the IPU highly appreciates the large participation of delegates at this Conference, the IPU President stated that we need to promote the role of young people in parliament and provide them with more opportunities. This is also demonstrated through the participation of delegations from all over the world. Only then can we work towards a better future. The IPU will continue to cooperate closely in this effort. The IPU President believes that with the participation and sharing of practical and effective experiences of delegates and the results of the Conference, we can create changes in reality towards a better future, especially through the efforts of young people.
