In May, coffee exports from South America continued to decline by 11.5% to 3.5 million bags, mainly due to a 12.3% decline in total exports from the region’s three main producing countries, Brazil, Colombia and Peru.

Brazil and Colombia saw their exports decline by 12.2% and 10.6%, respectively, to 2.5 million and just over 0.8 million bags. Unavailability of supply was the main reason behind the decline in exports from both countries.

Heavy rains cut Colombia's output by 21% in May, while Brazil's supplies are relatively tight after two consecutive years of below-average harvests, with the 2022-23 crop particularly affected by frost and drought.

As for Peru, its coffee exports continued to decline sharply by 24.9% due to adverse weather and political instability in major producing regions that have greatly affected export supplies. In addition, the export volume was unusually high compared to the same period last year.

Peruvian coffee exports increased by 54.7% in May 2022 to 137,948 bags, while the average export volume for May in the period 2014 - 2021 was 97,969 bags and the figure of 103,649 bags achieved in May 2023 is still 5.7% higher than the average.

Coffee exports from Africa also fell 7.2% in May and 5.8% in the first eight months of the current crop year to 8.1 million bags. Ivory Coast and Ethiopia were the main drivers of the region’s decline, with their combined exports falling 19.4% to 0.45 million bags in May.

However, exports from Central America and Mexico rose 12.4% in May to over 2.1 million bags, the third month of growth in the first eight months of the current coffee year. However, the region’s total coffee exports are still down slightly, by 2.1% in the first eight months of the 2022-23 crop year to 10 million bags.

Regionally, Honduras coffee exports increased 58% year-on-year to 0.8 million bags, the largest growth rate in May since the 80.4% increase achieved in 2000. This was due to a low base last year and some April shipments being delayed into May.

In the first eight months of the current crop year, Honduras exported a total of 3.6 million bags, up 7.5% compared to the same period last year.

Coffee exports from Asia and Oceania alone increased by 13.1% to 3.9 million bags in May and by 3.2% to 31.7 million bags in the first eight months of 2022-23. This was mainly due to a sharp 2.7-fold increase in coffee exports from Indonesia, the region’s main producer, to 0.6 million bags in May.
