By the morning of September 2, foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) had spread to Hien Thanh and Vinh O communes, Vinh Linh district. This is the third district in Quang Tri to have an outbreak of FMD after two mountainous districts, Huong Hoa and Dakrong.

Mr. Nguyen Phu Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Tri province, said that FMD outbreaks in livestock have occurred in 8 communes and towns of 3 districts: Huong Hoa, Dakrong and Vinh Linh. The total number of infected buffaloes and cows is 462; of which 13 died, 193 infected buffaloes and cows have recovered.
In particular, Hien Thanh and Vinh O communes (Vinh Linh district) are both areas where FMD outbreaks occurred in previous years and currently all buffaloes and cows in the district have not been vaccinated, so the disease is spontaneously occurring on the spot and the risk of the disease continuing to spread rapidly. On the other hand, the risk of outbreaks in other localities in the district is very high .
Quang Tri is currently prioritizing livestock vaccination in three districts with the epidemic, ensuring completion before September 10; other localities must complete vaccination before September 15.
In addition, localities with epidemics are focusing resources to control and completely handle outbreaks, preventing them from spreading; urgently vaccinating to surround outbreaks; temporarily suspending the buying, selling, transporting, and slaughtering of cattle and buffaloes, and tightening the management of slaughtering animals susceptible to FMD (pigs, goats) in communes in epidemic areas; at the same time, temporarily stopping the import and export, and raising new livestock susceptible to FMD (buffaloes, cows, goats, pigs) until receiving advice from specialized agencies .
On the same day, the People's Committee of Quang Tri province said that it had just issued an urgent document assigning the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the province to receive 27,000 doses of LMLM vaccine type O and A, 3,500 liters of Benkocid chemicals from the national reserve, issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to Quang Tri province to prevent animal diseases.
Based on the number of vaccines and chemicals provided, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development urgently allocates and directs localities to deploy vaccination, disinfection, and environmental decontamination to prevent animal diseases, ensuring speed, timeliness, effectiveness, and compliance with regulations.
