Quang Teo's real name is Nguyen Tien Quang, born in 1962 in Hanoi. He graduated from the Cheo Department of the Military College of Culture and Arts (now the Military University of Culture and Arts). He started his career as a Cheo performer, then moved to the Military Drama Theater in 1986 until his retirement.
He and his late co-star Giang Coi were once a perfect pair in the show "Gap Nhau Cuoi Tuan". His role as an honest, simple farmer or "barefoot tycoon" left an impression on the audience.
During his years working at the Army Drama Theater, Quang Teo traveled all over the country, bringing joy and laughter to the audience. He shared that he had traveled "through every nook and cranny of the country, there was no place he had not set foot on."
The male artist shared with Dan Tri reporter that although he is retired, he is busier than when he was working. At the age of 61, there are months when he runs shows for nearly 30 days in all the provinces of the North and Central. For many days in a row, he did not eat at home, and his wife was upset. But then, she was the one who encouraged him to go to work because she was afraid that her husband would be bored at home.
"I accept shows because I want to be busier, not because of the pay. At this age, being rich or poor is no longer important to me. Wherever I go, when I hear the audience calling out: "Quang Teo", I feel that I am still loved and very excited," Quang Teo confided.
Artist Quang Teo shared that he is not a picky person when it comes to shows. He accepts any show that suits him.
He said: "I always consider myself a "farmer" so I am never arrogant or pretentious with anyone. I do art and am loved by many people probably because of my simplicity."
According to Quang Teo, some artists are lucky enough to become famous and rich, but others work their whole lives in art and still only have enough to eat. He admits that he is a hard-working person, and after more than 40 years of "picking up" money, he has a house and a car, not a tycoon as many people speculate.
"People even rumored that I was going to buy a villa, but that was just a rumor. There were days when I drove myself to perform, traveling from Hanoi, Thai Binh to Hung Yen, and because I didn't get enough sleep, I had to park the car right on the edge of a rice field and fall asleep because I was so tired.
I am over 60 years old, with 40 years of work, I have just bought a small house in My Dinh, a garden house in the suburbs. Compared to young artists, I am still struggling," he confided.
Quang Teo recounted that when she first graduated, Le Quyen used to sing as a backup singer with a salary of 150,000 VND/show (Photo: Facebook character).
The male artist also unexpectedly revealed a little-known secret about the "queen of the tea room" Le Quyen, when they were both on stage together. He said that before building her current career, Le Quyen used to sing for him for a meager fee of 150,000 VND/show.
He said: "Everyone has a period of starting their career. At that time, Quyen was young, just out of school but also very hard-working. She had to sing as a backup singer before I performed with a salary of only 150,000 VND per night. Now that Le Quyen is famous, sometimes I have to perform as a backup singer for Le Quyen to sing."
The male comedian added that at that time, everyone was poor, the artists even rode bicycles to perform but no one felt miserable (Photo: Huu Nghi).
"Only through those difficult days can we appreciate today. Audiences of all times love artists. They are the motivation that helps us stay with the stage for a long time," Quang Teo affirmed.
