During the period from November 1964 to February 1965, Vung Ro wharf received 4 unnumbered ships, providing nearly 200 tons of weapons to the provinces of Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, and Dak Lak. From this support, Phu Yen province equipped nearly 3,000 new guns of various types for the guerrilla forces, while also ensuring explosives for the Phu Yen Ordnance Factory to manufacture mines, grenades, and hand grenades for combat, achieving many resounding feats; typically the Victory at Go Thi Thung tunnel in 1966; contributing to the victory of the General Offensive and Uprising in the Spring of Mau Than 1968; the historic victory of Route 5, together with the main force troops taking control of Phu Yen on April 1, 1975 and together with the army and people of the whole country completely liberated the South, reunifying the country.
In those glorious victories, there were the sacrifices of generations of cadres, soldiers, youth volunteers, laborers, along with the entire armed forces and people of the whole country in general, Phu Yen province in particular, of those who directly participated at Vung Ro wharf during the arduous and fierce years of resistance, especially the heroic fighting of the ship's sailors, soldiers, militia and guerrillas, creating the tragic Vung Ro battle in February 1965.
As Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet affirmed, “Times will pass, but the heroic feats and noble sacrifices of the forces that opened the strategic transport route named after beloved Uncle Ho on the East Sea, of the “numberless” ships, of the army and people at the ports whose mission was to support the southern revolution in the great resistance war against the US to save the country will forever go down in the history of our nation’s heroic struggle under the leadership of the glorious Communist Party of Vietnam. Our Fatherland and people will forever remember the contributions of those who created the miracle of the Ho Chi Minh Trail at sea.”
