According to students’ feedback, the Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages ​​and Information Technology only sent invitations to the graduation ceremony on October 27 to parents of excellent and good graduates. In addition, each student, regardless of whether they attended or not, had to pay 600,000 VND.

A student confided: "Today, I read the announcement about the upcoming graduation day and felt very sad. In the section that only had invitations for parents to attend the ceremony for excellent and good students, I felt very disappointed. My academic performance was only average, but when my parents heard that I was graduating, they were very happy and said they would prepare themselves to attend the ceremony with me. But unfortunately, I am not qualified enough for my parents to see that moment with their own eyes."

Another student responded: "Maybe my studies are not as good as those of my excellent students, but it is not the parents' fault. So if just because my child did not get good grades, my parents are not allowed to attend the graduation ceremony and witness the moment of receiving their child's achievements, it is really unfair."

Speaking with Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters, the media representative of Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages ​​and Information Technology confirmed that there was a misunderstanding among students about the school's announcement.

"It is not true that only parents of good and excellent students are allowed to attend the graduation ceremony. Parents of all students are allowed to attend the graduation ceremony. Students can invite their parents and relatives to witness the moment of receiving their diplomas. As for about 100 good and excellent graduates, the school will send invitation letters to each parent. The school has been doing this for many years," said the representative.

It is known that at the graduation ceremony held at Hoa Binh Theater on October 27, this school will have about 1,300 students receiving their degrees. Meanwhile, the theater's auditorium has about 2,000 seats.

"Therefore, all parents who are able to attend with students will be welcomed and seated by the school. However, to ensure security, the theater requires that only those with invitation tickets can enter, and all invitation tickets must have the theater's stamp. The school has taken note of the students' opinions and decided to send invitations to parents who wish to attend. In addition, for parents who do not have an invitation letter, if they come with students, the school will still flexibly invite them to the hall," the school's media representative shared.

According to this person, the school does not charge a graduation ceremony fee of 600,000 VND/student (whether attending or not), but this is a graduation fee that the school has applied for many years.

Invite parents through students

At some other universities, not all schools have separate invitations to each parent, but usually the school will notify students so they can invite their parents to attend with them.

Master Dang Kien Cuong, Head of Student Affairs Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry, said: "Of course, schools really want to invite parents to witness the important moment of their children. However, the difficulty of schools is that the facilities are difficult to meet the needs of organizing graduation ceremonies for thousands of students at the same time. If each student has 1 or 2 parents accompanying them, there will not be enough seats. Therefore, it can only be arranged at an appropriate level."

Graduation is a major event in every student's life.

According to Master Cuong, if the ceremony is held in a large theater, it will be very costly, and the school cannot collect more from students because they will react. "One of the solutions is to divide it into many graduation periods. For example, the auditorium of Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry only has 500 seats, the school divides it into many periods, each period has 250 students receiving their diplomas. The school does not have an invitation letter for each parent, but students can absolutely invite their parents to come along. That way, if parents attend, the auditorium will have enough seats to arrange for them," Mr. Cuong shared.

With Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, every year there is a school-level graduation ceremony for students with good and excellent grades. The rest are organized by the faculties, and in these ceremonies, parents are present to celebrate with the students.

"Inviting parents depends on each faculty. Some faculties send invitations to each parent, while others send general invitations to all parents through students. Large faculties such as food technology, business administration, etc. hold graduation ceremonies all day, while other faculties such as biotechnology, chemistry, etc. hold one session," said Master Pham Thai Son, Director of the Admissions and Communications Center of the University of Industry and Trade.

Meanwhile, Master Bui Quang Trung, Head of Communications Department of Nguyen Tat Thanh University, also said that the school will announce that students can invite their parents to attend the graduation without a separate invitation letter.

"However, due to the limited number of seats in the auditorium, the school organizes three graduation ceremonies a year. Parents who come will receive gifts and be arranged to sit outside the auditorium to watch the graduation ceremony on screen. Parents whose children graduate with excellent grades and are valedictorians will be invited to sit inside the auditorium. In my opinion, this is reasonable and students and parents will probably sympathize with the schools," said Master Trung.
