Tourist season concerns

The current time is when the demand for tourism increases dramatically. People often tend to travel far to famous tourist destinations. In addition, many agencies and units also organize vacations and picnics for employees during the summer.

According to statistics from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, in May 2024 alone, the number of international visitors to our country reached nearly 1.4 million, an increase of 51.0% over the same period last year. Meanwhile, the number of domestic visitors reached 12,000.

It is predicted that tourism demand will continue to increase in the near future. Hot weather combined with an increase in the number of visitors to tourist destinations makes people feel insecure about the risk of food poisoning.

Statistics from the Food Safety Department (Ministry of Health) show that in the first 5 months of 2024, 36 cases of food poisoning were recorded. Although the number of poisoning cases decreased compared to the same period in 2023, the number of cases increased by more than 1,000 people. This shows that there were large-scale poisoning cases, with hundreds of people infected and hospitalized.

Recently, many localities across the country have continuously recorded cases of food poisoning, including cases related to tourist destinations.

According to the Food Safety Department, the risk of food poisoning often increases in the summer when the weather is hot and humid, favorable for bacteria to grow and invade food and drinks.

In particular, when tourists eat or drink food introduced as local specialties by outdoor vendors at tourist attractions, they are very susceptible to food poisoning due to contamination from dust, insects, inadequate hygiene, or bacteria that grow more easily when food is not stored in a safe temperature zone.

In addition, improper food handling, processing and preservation habits are also the cause of food poisoning. Common food poisoning bacteria are cholera, E.coli, Campylobacter...

Recognize the signs and handle them promptly

According to medical experts, symptoms of food poisoning can begin within a few hours of eating contaminated food, and often include: Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Depending on the type of poisoning, it can cause fever or neurological symptoms. The severity of symptoms depends on the strain of bacteria causing the poisoning.

Dr. Nguyen Trong The, Head of the Department of Infectious Resuscitation, Institute of Clinical Infectious Diseases (108 Central Military Hospital) said that if food poisoning is left untreated, it can have very serious symptoms, even in many cases leading to multiple organ failure leading to death.

People with gastrointestinal infections often experience symptoms 6-24 hours after eating, including: Loose stools, sometimes constipation; nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or bloating; feeling hungry but not having an appetite; fever, fatigue, weakness; headache, dizziness; dehydration and electrolyte loss, sweating.

To prevent this, Dr. The recommends that people pay attention to: Eat cooked food, drink boiled water, and avoid using contaminated water sources.

Avoid using spoiled, expired or unknown foods; wash your hands with soap regularly, especially before eating and after using the toilet; exercise regularly to improve your health.

When experiencing symptoms of food poisoning, people should go to the nearest medical facility to be examined, diagnosed and given appropriate treatment by doctors to avoid life-threatening complications.
