In the face of severe cold affecting crops and livestock, the National Agricultural Extension Center has issued a document requesting agricultural extension agencies in the Northern localities to disseminate and provide technical guidance to people so that they can proactively implement preventive measures. Thereby, reducing damage to crops and livestock, while ensuring adequate food sources for the upcoming Lunar New Year, and stabilizing production in the 2024 spring crop.

Accordingly, for the area of vegetables that are ready for harvest, it is necessary to harvest immediately; for the group of leafy vegetables, it is necessary to cover the plants with nylon to avoid rain and cold; water enough moisture, add more potassium and phosphorus fertilizers, reduce nitrogen fertilizers, spray or water some biological products to increase the cold resistance of the plants .

Vegetables such as onions, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage, kohlrabi, cauliflower... need to be watered sufficiently, fertilized with potassium and wood ash, and sprayed with foliar fertilizer every 7 to 10 days to increase the plant's resistance to cold.

Deputy Director of the National Agricultural Extension Center Hoang Van Hong said: "For rice fields that have been sown, farmers need to cover them tightly with nylon."

For livestock, absolutely do not graze livestock and poultry when it is raining, or when the ambient temperature is below 10 degrees Celsius; reinforce the barn to avoid drafts and rain from entering the barn, clean the barn regularly, and keep the barn dry. When the weather is very cold, freezing, or accompanied by rain, keep livestock and poultry in the barn, keep them warm; prepare enough food and warm water for livestock and poultry...

In the aquaculture sector, before cold spells, farmers need to feed more adequately; ponds are covered with nylon, tarpaulin or water hyacinth is planted on 1/2-2/3 of the pond surface area to the northeast to block the wind; aquaculture feed needs to be supplemented with vitamins and probiotics to aid digestion and increase resistance.

Some aquatic species with high economic value and small pond areas can be covered with tarpaulin or raised in greenhouses, with heating lamps used inside to increase the temperature of the pond, helping to limit risks when the cold weather lasts for a long time.
