On the morning of August 27, at the Government Office, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son had an online phone call with Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith.
During the phone call, Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith warmly congratulated Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son on the occasion of the 79th anniversary of the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the 79th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnamese diplomatic sector; and congratulated Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son on being approved by the Vietnamese National Assembly to be appointed as Deputy Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
The Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister expressed his belief that with his capacity and extensive experience, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son will continue to contribute to the successful implementation of foreign affairs tasks assigned by the Party and State of Vietnam.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son sincerely thanked the Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister for his best wishes and brotherly affection; said that the glorious achievements that Vietnam has achieved over the past 79 years are thanks to the companionship and sincere and wholehearted support of Lao comrades; emphasized that he will continue to cooperate closely with the Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister to contribute to further promoting the special relationship between Vietnam and Laos in general and between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs in particular.
The two Deputy Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers expressed their delight at the positive developments, growing closeness and trust in many areas between the two countries in recent times. Political relations continue to maintain a core role in the overall orientation of bilateral relations. Defense and security cooperation continues to be strengthened, increasingly close and effective, supporting each other to maintain political stability, ensure defense - security, and social order and safety in each country. Economic-trade-investment cooperation is being promoted. The total import-export turnover in the first 7 months of 2024 reached 1.1 billion USD, an increase of 16.7% over the same period in 2023. Cooperation in other areas such as education - training, health care, culture and people-to-people exchange continues to achieve positive results.
The two sides agreed to continue to coordinate effectively in implementing the results of agreements and high-level visits, especially the State visit to Laos by President To Lam (July 2024) as well as the 46th meeting of the Vietnam-Laos Intergovernmental Committee.
Discussing cooperation at regional and international forums, the two Deputy Prime Ministers and Ministers agreed to increase experience sharing, information exchange, and close coordination at multilateral forums, especially at the United Nations, ASEAN, and Mekong sub-regional cooperation mechanisms. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam Bui Thanh Son affirmed that Vietnam will continue to support and assist Laos in successfully assuming its international responsibilities in the coming time, especially the role of ASEAN/AIPA Chair in 2024, contributing to enhancing the role and position of Laos in the region and the world.
