Recently, Tran Thanh released the first behind-the-scenes video of the movie Mai - a work scheduled to be released on the first day of Lunar New Year 2024. The video provides an overview of the project's preparation and production process.
Director Tran Thanh said it took him 3 years to complete the script, cast and find the setting for Mai. To create a unique and vivid filming space, Tran Thanh did not hesitate to invest in a magnificent set of equipment and modern machinery.
After Bo Gia , the male artist continued to collaborate with director of photography Diep The Vinh. The two discussed carefully to realize each page of the script, fully reflecting the character's psychology and the story.
In particular, Tran Thanh faced many challenges when setting up the old apartment building - where Mai (Phuong Anh Dao) and Duong (Tuan Tran) live. After searching, Tran Thanh was impressed by An Binh apartment building (District 5, Ho Chi Minh City) thanks to its unique and ancient architecture.
To get panoramic footage of the apartment, the crew had to install a long crane, transport the camera by stairs to the upper floor, and stretch a tarpaulin to cover the entire common area to ensure the best lighting conditions.
However, the apartment building was still quite cramped, not enough to accommodate close-up shots inside the house, so Tran Thanh decided to recreate the entire apartment building at a 1:1 scale in the studio. The production crew recreated the hallway, the 6 facades of the apartment building, and the 2 fully furnished houses of Duong and Mai.
When watching the film, the audience will see the director's intention when choosing a classic house with warm tones, along with objects such as a piano, bookshelves, picture frames, and bird cages to reflect the artistic and romantic soul of the character Duong.
In contrast, Mai's house has bright and minimalist tones, but is very neat, showing the image of a skillful woman who knows how to manage life.
Tran Thanh also created a skylight in Mai's house - a characteristic that he observed from Vietnamese living culture.
"I want to recreate the feeling of a Vietnamese house. I made a skylight, a cultural feature of Vietnamese people in large apartment buildings. Through the skylight, people will take air from outside into the house to cool it down, creating an environment of exchange between different houses, or in other words, showing the connection between "different worlds".
I really like the feeling of having a skylight in the filming set like that," Tran Thanh said.
The male artist also highly appreciated the main actress Phuong Anh Dao when she played the role of Mai.
"On the day of casting for Mai, when Dao performed just one scene, everyone in the crew hugged each other happily because "Here Mai is". Phuong Anh Dao is diverse in her acting, has inner feelings, and is sincere. The face of the character Mai must make everyone see a woman over 30 but still young," he added.
Mai is a psychological comedy, telling the story of Duong (Tuan Tran) - a playboy who can't remember the names of the girls he's dated. Duong's life changes when he develops feelings for Mai (Phuong Anh Dao).
In addition to the two main actors, many other faces in Bo Gia and Nha Ba Nu also return, such as Uyen An, Ngoc Giau, Viet Anh, Quoc Khanh, Quynh Ly, Kha Nhu...
The movie will be released on January 10, 2024 (New Year's Day).
