(CLO) On December 1, the Houthi militant group in Yemen announced that it had launched a hypersonic missile targeting central Israel, while Israeli forces announced that they had successfully intercepted "a flying object" before it crossed the country's airspace.
The Houthis said the attack targeted “an important location” in the Tel Aviv area. The rebels claimed they used a Palestine 2 missile, a hypersonic ballistic missile produced in Yemen.

On the Israeli side, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said their air defense system shot down the flying object before it entered Israeli territory. The incident occurred after sirens sounded in several areas of central Israel early in the morning.
Since the Gaza conflict began, Houthi rebels have carried out frequent drone and missile attacks on Israel. The Houthis are part of Iran's so-called "axis of resistance", which opposes Israel and the United States.
In addition to targeting Israel, Houthi rebels have also increased harassment of ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in recent times, seriously disrupting important trade routes.
The Houthi rebels' open use of hypersonic missiles is a worrying sign of the development of military technology by armed groups in the Middle East and around the world.
