Currently, Vietnam has 6 main multimedia press agencies, 127 newspapers, 670 magazines; 72 radio and television agencies. Although different in type, most press agencies are experiencing a decline in revenue, especially television stations and press agencies that are completely financially autonomous.

This difficulty is partly due to the fact that domestic press agencies are facing competition from social platforms for advertising - communication and readers and viewers. Businesses are also cutting costs for advertising - communication, especially in recent years. In addition, the State's resources and mechanisms for ordering press are limited and the situation of copyright infringement has not been thoroughly resolved.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Chi Trung - Deputy Director of the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training, the development of the press and media economy does not only need to be viewed from the perspective of a few specific cases, from a single field or separate type, but needs to be viewed on the overall, strategic and comprehensive scale of the national press system, associated with the context of strong digital economic development today, thereby making a breakthrough development to well perform the role and function of revolutionary press, of the professional and humane Vietnamese media system.

In order to analyze and clarify the above issue, the Ministry of Information and Communications in collaboration with the Institute of Journalism and Communication - University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi organized an international conference with the theme "Vietnam's journalism and communication economy in the context of digital economic development" .

The workshop took place with 3 sessions and discussions including: Plenary session - Identifying the economic picture of Vietnam's press; Thematic discussion session - Building a unique press economic model in Vietnam; Thematic discussion session - Developing the media market in the boom of the digital economy.

The discussion sessions aimed to clarify issues such as: successes, limitations, and shortcomings in the journalism economy in Vietnam; models, ideas, and mechanisms for developing the journalism economy, drawing from international lessons and new developments in Vietnam; analyzing forecasts and issues that need attention in journalism and media economics in the context of digital economic development in the coming time; the accompaniment of the journalism and media training system in the field of journalism economics in particular as well as in the long-term sustainable development of Vietnamese journalism.

The workshop was attended by many leading scientists in the field of journalism and communication, especially international researchers from the European Union, ASEAN, China, experts from corporations such as Google, Viettel, VieOn, Galaxy, Le Bross..., who have a deep interest and will bring many valuable opinions to the workshop.

The international conference “Vietnam’s journalism and media economy in the context of digital economic development” is scheduled to take place on June 14, 2024 in Hanoi. The conference is part of the annual event of the Vietnamese journalism community called “June Journalism Forum” - the third time (2024) co-chaired by the Information and Communications Magazine, Vietnamnet Electronic Newspaper (Ministry of Information and Communications) and the Institute of Journalism and Communications (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi).
