The appeal of UNESCO Global Geoparks
After being recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark of Non Nuoc Cao Bang with 130 unique heritage sites, reflecting the history of the formation of the earth over 500 million years, the province has built 4 Geopark tourist routes, including "Journey to the origin", "Discovering Phja Oac - the mountain of changes", "Experience indigenous culture in the land of fairyland", "A time of fire and flowers". This is an advantage for Cao Bang to widely promote its unique geological and cultural heritage values to domestic and international friends.
Tourist Doan Hai Le (Hanoi) has visited Cao Bang many times. Each time she comes here, she chooses different destinations. The time she visited and explored Ban Gioc waterfall when the rice was ripe; ate chestnuts, sweet sticky rice... left many impressions on her. Hai Le said that Cao Bang truly has a unique beauty, rich in identity, attracting visitors. Coming to the Pac Bo National Special Relic Site to listen to an introduction about Uncle Ho during his revolutionary activities in Cao Bang or watching the Mountain God's Eye and sitting in homestays to enjoy the smooth, captivating Then and Tinh melodies... are also memorable experiences.
Ms. Jitka Hertig (Swiss Geopark Expert) on the occasion of coming to Cao Bang to attend the UNESCO Global Geopark Conference in the Asia-Pacific region in 2024 shared that each experience route of the UNESCO Non Nuoc Cao Bang Global Geopark has its own charm. Visiting the "Discovering Phja Oac - The Mountain of Changes" route in Nguyen Binh district, Ms. Jitka Hertig walked in the immense green bamboo forest; watched Dao Tien ethnic girls embroidering beeswax. In the "A Time of Fire and Flowers" southern experience route, she climbed majestic high rocky mountains to see where President Ho Chi Minh directly commanded the front in the Border Campaign in 1950... This Swiss tourist said that she will arrange time to return to Cao Bang to explore and learn about the traditional festivals of the ethnic groups here...
Since being officially recognized, through the construction and development of the value of UNESCO Global Geopark, Cao Bang tourism has grown quite rapidly. From 2020 to the end of August 2024: The total number of tourists to the province reached over 5.4 million, equal to 108% of the plan. To date, the general tourism targets have been achieved and exceeded the targets set for the period 2020-2025.
Promoting the value of UNESCO Global Geopark
After more than 6 years of construction and development, Non Nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark has actively implemented tasks of preserving and promoting heritage values; building and exploiting in terms of creating new, unique tourism products, creating livelihoods for ethnic minorities.
Chairman of the People's Committee of Phuc Sen Commune, Luong Van Huan, said: in Phuc Sen, there is a community tourism site of Phja Thap incense village and a community tourism site of Pac Rang blacksmith village. Here, the Nung An ethnic people in the craft villages of forging agricultural tools, making incense and do paper have joined as partners of the Geopark, so they have the opportunity to receive training, improve the quality of craft village products and introduce products to domestic and international friends, and raise awareness of protecting heritage values and the ecological environment...
Vice Chairwoman of Trung Khanh District People's Committee Chu Thi Vinh emphasized that the district has over 20 Geopark heritage sites, notably Ban Gioc Waterfall. To attract visitors, the district annually organizes the Ban Gioc Waterfall Festival with many cultural and artistic activities of the Tay and Nung ethnic groups; culinary competitions introducing famous products such as chestnuts, honey sticky rice, grass duck, white jelly, etc. The district also encourages businesses and households to invest and upgrade tourism services. To date, the district has the Khuoi Ky stone village community tourism site, 22 homestay accommodation services, 22 standard hotels and motels, and the establishment of 67 folk song clubs...
Director of the Non Nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark Management Board Vi Tran Thuy said that in the coming time, the unit will continue to advise the Provincial People's Committee, departments and branches to invest in infrastructure for 4 Geopark experience routes; guide and train people in the heritage area to do community tourism associated with traditional craft villages and OCOP products. Districts are interested in recreating many cultural festivals of ethnic minorities, encouraging artisans to collect folk songs, folk dances, build village and hamlet art troupes to serve tourism development...
