Participants were first interviewed at an average age of 53, asking questions about their consumption of caffeinated beverages such as coffee and tea. They also answered questions about their height, weight, diet, exercise, and sleep.

Coffee drinkers were divided into four groups based on their coffee intake: No daily coffee, 1 cup of coffee per day, 2-3 cups per day, and 4 cups per day.

Tea drinkers were also divided into four groups according to drinking frequency: never drink tea, drink at least once a month, at least once a week, and drink daily.

After 20 years of follow-up, at age 73, they were assessed for their physical fitness, through interviews and physical tests.

People who drink tea and coffee will maintain significantly better physical strength in old age.

The results found that drinking coffee, black tea or green tea in middle age significantly reduced the risk of physical decline in old age.

Specifically, people who drink four cups of coffee a day have significantly reduced rates of physical decline in old age, compared to people who do not drink coffee daily, according to Medical Express.

And people who drink black tea and green tea every day also have a significantly reduced rate of physical weakness compared to those who do not drink.

The researchers further evaluated the association between caffeine intake and the risk of late-life frailty. The results also showed that higher caffeine intake was associated with lower rates of frailty.

In addition to caffeine, coffee and tea are rich in bioactive polyphenols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce the risk of diseases that increase frailty, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and neurodegenerative diseases.
