Marie-Jose Perec, the famous French athlete, expressed her emotion when saying goodbye to the Olympics: “This is a beautiful way to say goodbye because everything has to end.” Perec lit the flame at the opening ceremony on July 26.

Throughout the summer, the Games created a wave of positivity, bringing a rare sense of national pride and unity, as France saw great success from athletes such as Leon Marchand (swimming) and Teddy Riner (judo). More than 100 French athletes received the Legion d'Honneur medal, presented by President Emmanuel Macron.

Mr Macron also took the opportunity to promote the idea of creating a "National Day of Sport" every year on September 14, to encourage people to participate in community sports activities.
