NO CREDIT, NO BLAME
Speaking at the conference on orientations for the development of high-performance sports until 2030, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung emphasized: "The Ministry has directed the Department of Sports and Physical Training to complete the content submitted to the Government, requesting the Department of Sports and Physical Training to mobilize resources to complete the tasks of the sports sector, consider implementing strategies to improve Vietnam's sports achievements in the regional and world arenas. We do not compete for credit, do not blame, need to have constructive opinions, need to determine where Vietnam's sports are in the international arena, what are the advantages and difficulties, from there forecast the development trend. We must answer the question "what to do, how to make Vietnam's sports reach the continental and world level?".
Vietnamese sports need more gold medals at ASIAD and Olympics
Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Training Dang Ha Viet pointed out the paradox of Vietnamese sports today, which is that despite achieving high rankings in the last 3 SEA Games, Vietnamese athletes have performed poorly in larger arenas such as the ASIAD or the Olympics. Specifically, at the 19th ASIAD, Vietnam only won 4 gold medals, behind Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. At the Tokyo Olympics, Vietnamese athletes did not win any medals, while 4 Southeast Asian sports delegations won medals, even 3 delegations from Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia won Olympic gold medals.
SPLITTING ALARMING SITUATION
The Department of Sports and Physical Training aims to have 12-15 athletes qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics, win 5-6 gold medals at the 2026 ASIAD, and maintain a position in the top 3 of the overall delegation at the 2025, 2027, 2029 SEA Games, and top 2 in Olympic sports. Currently, Vietnam only has 3 official spots for the 2024 Olympics, including Nguyen Thi That (cycling), Nguyen Huy Hoang (swimming) and Trinh Thu Vinh (shooting). The remaining athletes are still racing to reach the Olympic standard.

The leaders of the Department of Sports and Physical Training pointed out that Vietnamese sports still have many limitations, such as the number of athletes and unstable achievements at the Olympics and ASIAD; the domestic competition system lacks high-level international tournaments; key sports do not have a competition system from primary school level and the training movement has not developed widely; the infrastructure system is still lacking, especially for high-level sports; there is a lack of highly qualified, well-trained coaches capable of training regional-level athletes.
Some other alarming situations of Vietnamese sports were analyzed: the source of young talent is not much (about 960 athletes are concentrated in the youth team); athletes competing for achievements at the Olympics and ASIAD do not have high rankings; the domestic coaching force reaching world and continental levels is still small; equipment serving at the center is still lacking, not up to international standards; training and competition costs do not meet the demand; it is difficult to hire world-class experts due to salary limitations; there is a lack of specialized functional foods to ensure nutrition for athletes; the treatment regime is still lacking compared to other countries in the region and the world; there is a lack of resources to apply advanced science and technology.
According to Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Training Dang Ha Viet, to create a breakthrough at the ASIAD and the Olympics, Vietnamese sports need to build a scientific and sustainable athlete training system, and have a roadmap and plan to focus investment resources. Many opinions agree that Vietnamese sports need a lot more money to improve performance, estimated at about 6,000 billion VND in the period of 2024 - 2030, mainly from budget and socialized sources, to achieve the goal.
NEED TO ELIMINATE TERM THINKING
Speaking at the conference, Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh, former Director of the Department of High Performance Sports (Sports Committee, now the Department of Sports), emphasized that sports leaders and managers must eliminate the mindset of tenure to develop sustainable sports.
Mr. Minh emphasized that the process of selecting talents and training high-level athletes (national and international sports masters) takes place over many years, for example about 8-10 years depending on the sport, some sports take 14-16 years, some sports take up to 18-20 years. Therefore, Vietnamese sports need a very tight and clear development and management roadmap, avoiding the situation where leaders and managers only try to do well during their term, then do not pay attention to their successors, and have no responsibility when they leave their positions.
Some other shortcomings pointed out by Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh are that Vietnamese sports still consider the SEA Games as the focus, not investing properly in ASIAD and the Olympics; facilities are degraded and lacking, and socialization of sports is slow. In particular, Mr. Minh believes that some sports federations and associations are not proactive in seeking social resources to develop sports.
Regarding solutions for developing Vietnamese sports, Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh said that it is necessary to define the goals and tasks of focusing on investing in athletes to improve their performance in some key sports at ASIAD and Olympics, focusing on ASIAD, classifying to arrange for reasonable development, planning for training of key athletes, consolidating the training and coaching system of athletes. At the same time, the socialization of sports needs to be promoted to have more resources to invest in athletes, further promoting the movement.
On December 22, the sports industry continued its summary conference, discussing in more depth short- and long-term development plans.
