According to Axios news agency, at a press conference at Trump Tower on September 26, former US President Trump made a surprise announcement, although previously, those close to him and his campaign team thought that this meeting was unlikely.
According to the announcement, the meeting will take place at 9:45 a.m. on September 27 (US time, ie 8:45 p.m. on the same day Vietnam time), at Trump Tower in Manhattan, New York City.
Although Mr. Trump and President Zelensky had a phone call last July, if it takes place, this will be the first face-to-face meeting between the two since the American billionaire's presidential term (2017-2021).
Earlier, on the same day, September 26, at a campaign event in North Carolina, the former US President said that Kiev should "make a little concession" to appease Moscow and avoid a bloody conflict with its neighboring country, which he said "needlessly happened".
Mr. Trump also threatened to cut off US aid to Ukraine and declared that he would not send US troops to Ukraine if he won this year's presidential election.
The Ukrainian leader is in the United States and met with his host counterpart Joe Biden as well as Vice President Kamala Harris, now a Democratic presidential candidate, at the White House on September 26.
On this occasion, the White House owner announced nearly $8 billion in new military aid to Kiev, while Ms. Harris reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the Eastern European country's government.
During his campaign activities in recent days, Mr. Trump has voiced criticism regarding US aid to Ukraine.
