Mr. Trump said he would discuss with Canada and Mexico today, while declaring that he would soon impose tariffs on the European Union.
On February 2, local time, Mr. Trump announced plans to negotiate with Canada and Mexico after imposing tariffs of up to 25% on goods from these two neighboring countries.
Speaking to reporters after flying back to Washington, US President Donald Trump said he would "speak to Prime Minister (Justin) Trudeau tomorrow morning and I will also speak to Mexico tomorrow morning".
“I don't expect anything too dramatic,” he added.
In addition to these two countries, Mr. Trump has also imposed an additional 10% tariff on China. China, Mexico and Canada are the three leading trading partners of the US and all have announced that they will retaliate when the tariffs take effect on February 4.
In addition to the 25% retaliatory tariffs on US goods, Canada has announced legal action in response. A Canadian official told AFP that Ottawa would file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO). China had previously said it would take a similar action.
As a proponent of tariffs, Mr. Trump has always asserted that the impact of tariffs will not fall on American consumers, contrary to the opinions of many experts.
But in a statement on February 2, he acknowledged that Americans may feel "pain" but said it would be "worth it" to protect US interests. "We will make America great again, and it will all be worth the price," he wrote on the social network Truth Social.
Speaking about Europe, Mr Trump stressed that he would “absolutely” impose tariffs on the EU. The US president accused the EU of “really taking advantage of us, we’ve had a deficit of over $300 billion… They don’t buy our cars, they don’t buy our agricultural products”. Asked if he would impose tariffs on the UK, Mr Trump said “it could happen”.
Analysts predict the trade war will slow U.S. growth and raise prices, at least in the short term. To stem the rise in fuel prices, Mr. Trump has limited tariffs on energy imports from Canada to just 10%.
