Grenell, who served as the US ambassador to Germany and as acting director of national intelligence during Trump’s 2017-2021 term, would play a key role in Trump’s efforts to end the conflict if he is nominated to the post. There is currently no special envoy for Russia-Ukraine, but Trump is considering creating one, people familiar with the matter said. It is unclear whether Grenell would accept the new post. During the campaign, Trump vowed to end the conflict quickly, but he has not said how he would do so. Some of Grenell’s positions could be frowned upon by Ukrainian leaders. In a July roundtable discussion hosted by Bloomberg , Grenell advocated the creation of “autonomous regions” as a way to resolve the conflict. He also said he would not support Ukraine joining NATO in the near future, a position shared by many of Mr. Trump’s allies. Mr. Grenell’s supporters point to his diplomatic experience and deep understanding of European affairs. In addition to serving as ambassador to Germany, Mr. Grenell was the president’s special envoy to Serbia and Kosovo peace talks.
