In the second half of 2023, the Vietnam Football Federation plans to build two U23 teams with different goals. Of which, the Vietnam U23 team led by coach Hoang Anh Tuan will participate in the 2023 Southeast Asian U23 in August in Thailand and the 19th ASIAD in China a month later. The other team, led by coach Philippe Troussier, will have the main task of qualifying for the 2024 Asian U23 Championship.
Coach Troussier and Hoang Anh Tuan can continuously exchange information to have the best choice of personnel. Specifically, the French strategist sent his colleague a list of 18 players for U23 Vietnam.
“These are potential players who need to be tested. They are considered promising but have not had many opportunities to play for their clubs. For example, defender Vo Minh Trong, who played in the U23 Doha Cup and SEA Games, but had few opportunities to play in Dong Thap.
Through tournaments like this, they have the opportunity to practice and compete. If they maintain their form and play well, I believe coach Philippe Troussier will give the players more opportunities in the future,” coach Hoang Anh Tuan shared.

Notably, overseas Vietnamese player Andrej Nguyen was not on the list of preparations for the Vietnam U23 team despite having participated in the most recent training session. Explaining this issue, coach Hoang Anh Tuan said: “In the case of overseas Vietnamese players, most of them do not have the necessary procedures to immediately participate in the competition with the Vietnam youth team, including passport problems. It's that simple.
Participating in a tournament is not something that can be approved by registering today. We have to register a large list early and choose the people from it.

According to the plan, U23 Vietnam will gather from July 28 before participating in the 2023 Southeast Asian U23 tournament in mid-August. Here, U23 Vietnam is in Group C with relatively weak opponents, the Philippines and Laos. Coach Hoang Anh Tuan revealed the new lineup that will be used in the near future: “The upcoming list will be new faces who have never appeared or have had little opportunity. Many players are playing in the Second Division. Maybe when participating in the 2023 Southeast Asian U23 Finals, the team will not have the best or most experienced players.
However, for me, that's okay. Without this player, U23 Vietnam will have other players. Who knows, maybe a few strange players will come to light in this tournament. That's also what I'm aiming for. The important thing is that after tournaments like this, the players will have more opportunities to participate in the national team."
