Mr Erdogan thanked supporters gathered outside his residence in Istanbul on the evening of May 28.

“I want to congratulate all members of our campaign team,” Mr Erdogan said.

President Erdogan also thanked voters for their trust in voting for him for a second term, and said he had begun to receive congratulations from leaders around the world.

"Now, I receive congratulatory calls from the President of Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, the Prime Minister of Libya," Mr. Erdogan said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also congratulated the Turkish president on May 28, expressing Moscow's appreciation for Erdogan's "personal contribution to strengthening Russian-Turkish friendly relations" and reiterating Russia's "readiness to continue constructive dialogue on topical issues."

The first round of elections in Türkiye ended in a draw as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and opposition coalition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu both failed to reach the 50% threshold needed to win the election in the first round of voting.

More than 64 million Turks are eligible to vote in the second round of elections at nearly 192,000 polling stations. There are 3.4 million voters abroad who cast their ballots between May 20 and 24.

The vote will decide not only who leads Türkiye, a NATO member state of 85 million people, but also shape its foreign policy and how it manages the country amid a cost-of-living crisis.
