Stopping at a small stall on the way from Tri Ton town to An Tuc commune, Bay Nui area in An Giang province, the star apple fruit is only sold in small quantities. The price of 1kg of star apple is 70,000 VND, but the prices can be doubled at the market, downtown or when brought back to the plains.

The selling price is so high, but many people are still willing to buy, because the late season tram has big fruit, only one sweet flavor, not mixed like the beginning of the season or during the peak fruit picking period.

Perhaps this year the drought lasted so long that only the strong myrtle trees could bear fruit in time, around the 4th and 5th lunar months. The weaker trees had to wait for rain to water them, silently bearing fruit late.

Thanks to that, although this year's plum season is not as bustling as previous years, the long duration creates an opportunity for those who have not had time to enjoy it to go to the mountains to buy and eat.

During the peak season of the star apple, households who specialize in picking fruit for retail or wholesale can earn millions of dong per day. It sounds “delicious”, but in reality, picking star apple is quite hard work and depends on the number of star apple trees in each family’s field.

People who depend on the myrtle tree are worried that in a few years there won't be much myrtle left to eat. Because the demand for buying ancient myrtle trees is very high.

Instead of working hard to pick the fruit every year, some people will accept to sell a long-standing tree for a few tens of millions of dong. Basically, because they are wild trees that grow by themselves, no one takes care of them, and when the harvest season comes, they enjoy "heaven's blessings".

Looking at the lush green fields of Melaleuca in Tri Ton district, people think that the story of Melaleuca “disappearing” is a distant concern. Nestled under the canopy of tall trees is a familiar image of mountain residents living and resting after a hard day’s work. Melaleuca fields are so vast that no one can count their number.

However, the concerns of the local people here are not without basis, when the need to exploit forest trees in general, and myrtle trees in particular, in mountainous areas has been quietly taking place for many years.

The star apple is not only a popular "specialty" of wild fruit, but its value and beauty also attract tourists to the Bay Nui region, An Giang province, contributing to generating income for local people every year.
