Taking advantage of natural conditions, in recent years, many medicinal plant growing models have been formed in Vinh Phuc province, bringing high economic efficiency.

The medicinal plant growing model contributes to shifting the crop structure in many localities in Vinh Phuc province.

In particular, the support policy mechanisms of Vinh Phuc province are creating important conditions to promote the production of medicinal herbs in the direction of goods, linking production with product consumption.

Taking advantage of the climate and soil, Mr. Truong Huu Tai, Ho Son commune (Tam Dao) has promoted the propagation and expansion of the planting area of some medicinal plants, contributing to the preservation and development of precious medicinal plants. Photo: Nguyen Luong

The model of growing ginseng, ginseng is one of the medicinal plants with high economic efficiency and is being grown by many farmers in Vinh Phuc province.

With his dynamic and sensitive agricultural production, many years ago, Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Hong Chau commune (Yen Lac district) rented land and switched from growing corn to growing some medicinal plants such as basil and mint.

After several years of experimenting with new plant varieties, Mr. Hung confidently asserted: “The economic efficiency of medicinal plants is many times higher than traditional rice and corn cultivation.” No longer having low incomes like before, Mr. Hung now earns millions of dong per hectare of medicinal plants per crop.

In particular, since 2022, with the signing of a contract with Vietnam Medicinal Plants Joint Stock Company, Mr. Hung's family and a number of households participating in the association have received technical support from the company in planting and caring for motherwort, Phyllanthus urinaria and basil according to GACP-WHO standards.

Growing medicinal plants, Mr. Hung's family has their products guaranteed at stable prices, higher than market prices.

Thanks to stable output, 1 year after implementing the linkage model, in 2023, Mr. Hung rented more land for production, expanding the family's medicinal plant growing area from 1 hectare to 3 hectares, earning a profit of 200 million VND in 2023.

Mr. Hung said: “Although the output for medicinal plants in recent years has been relatively favorable, however, market prices often fluctuate erratically. Therefore, participating in the model of linking production and consumption of medicinal plants helps people feel secure in production, without having to worry about being forced down by traders like before.”

Also one of the successful households with the medicinal plant model, the family of Nguyen Thi Ha, Bac Binh commune (Lap Thach district, Vinh Phuc province) currently owns a purple Morinda officinalis garden with an area of 2 hectares.

Unlike motherwort and basil, the Morinda officinalis plant has a production cycle of 3-4 years. Therefore, to ensure that there are products for sale every year, Ms. Ha's family has divided the Morinda officinalis growing area into many lots, each lot having a different age.

By growing Morinda officinalis according to GACP-WHO standards, for many years now her family has signed a contract with Vietnam Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company to purchase all product output.

Currently, Ms. Ha's family's model of growing Morinda officinalis is generating an income of more than 1 billion VND per year.

The emergence of highly economically efficient medicinal herb production models shows that Vinh Phuc is a province with many favorable conditions for developing medicinal herb production.

In particular, in recent years, the demand for medicinal herbs and health foods has increased.

Therefore, there is great room for developing medicinal plant production models in the direction of commodities, with links between production and consumption.

In Decision No. 2075 of Vinh Phuc Provincial People's Committee issued on September 10, 2018 on approving the list of key agricultural products at the provincial level until 2020, with a vision to 2030, medicinal herbs (Morinda officinalis, yellow flower tea) have been identified by the Provincial People's Committee as one of the province's key agricultural products.

On that basis, many policies to support the development of key crops in general and medicinal plants in particular have been born and implemented.

Specifically, implementing Resolution No. 86/2019 of the People's Council of Vinh Phuc province on Regulations on policies to support linkage in production and consumption of agricultural products in Vinh Phuc province, from 2021 to present, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has accepted and provided funding for 11 linkage plans, including 1 plan to link production and consumption of golden flower tea products.

Implementing the Project on organic agriculture development and organic orientation in Vinh Phuc province for the period 2023-2025, with a vision to 2030, in 2023, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) of Vinh Phuc province coordinated with localities to select and implement 4 models of organic medicinal plant cultivation, with a scale of 1 hectare/model.

The project includes 2 models of organic yellow camellia planting in Tam Quan commune (Tam Dao district); 2 models of organic Morinda officinalis planting in Thai Hoa commune and Bac Binh commune (Lap Thach district).

At the same time, Vinh Phuc province aims to strive for the ratio of organic output to total output for natural medicinal products to reach 95% by 2030 and for intensive farming (using the forest environment for production) to reach 80%.

Thereby, it aims to create safe raw material areas, meeting the strict requirements of raw material areas serving pharmaceutical processing, contributing to promoting the development of the pharmaceutical processing industry and health protection products of the province.

It can be said that, along with the dynamism of households, the province's policy mechanisms are an important driving force to help form concentrated medicinal herb production areas in an organic direction, linking production with consumption, contributing to job creation and promoting agricultural restructuring for many localities.
