A product page on Nvidia's website for Chinese consumers shows that the new Nvidia RTX 4090D — which a company spokesperson said will be released in January 2023, according to Reuters — has 11% fewer "CUDA" (compute unified device architecture) cores than versions of the chip sold outside of China.
RTX is Nvidia's line of advanced gaming GPUs (graphics processing units). The company's CUDA architecture is essentially the GPU equivalent of CPU cores (processing units).
Nvidia did not immediately comment when contacted by CNBC , but a company spokesperson told Reuters the chip was “designed to fully comply with U.S. government export controls.” Nvidia has been in close contact with the U.S. government while developing the product, the person added.
Washington has imposed export restrictions on China to prevent companies there from accessing some of the most advanced chips from U.S. companies. The export rules are primarily aimed at chips that enable AI applications, but gaming-focused processors are also in the crosshairs, as many processors also have potential uses in artificial intelligence.
The Nvidia RTX 4090 has been added to a list of chips banned from export to China, according to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on October 17. On its website, Nvidia said the RTX 4090D chip leverages AI to improve performance.
Nvidia's stock has been on a tear in 2023, more than tripling year-to-date. The company has benefited from demand for AI, thanks in no small part to the buzz generated by OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot.
