The model of raising commercial eels in cement tanks is still very new in Son Tay district in particular and mountainous districts of Quang Ngai province in general.
However, the initial effectiveness of the commercial eel farming model implemented at Mrs. Dinh Thi He's household (Son Tinh commune, Son Tay district, Quang Nhai province) has opened up many prospects for the development of this model.
Eel is a specialty fish with high economic value. However, currently, artificial reproduction of eel fry has not been successful in our country.
The source of eel seeds for commercial eel farming is mainly taken from nature. Therefore, the source of eel seeds does not ensure the quality of farming (uneven fish, fish that have been electrocuted, hooked...) for the stable development of commercial eel farming in Quang Ngai province.
In 2022, the Quang Ngai Provincial Agricultural Extension Center will implement a commercial eel model in a cement tank in Son Tinh commune, Son Tay district with a scale of 60 m2.
The number of eel fry released for farming is 600, the density of eel fry released for farming in cement tanks is 10 fish/ m2 , eel fry size is 100g/fish.
The source of eel fry for farming is purchased from the Aquaculture Research Institute III. The fry have been successfully raised by this Institute from larvae and small fry in the wild.
Eel is a specialty fish, freshwater fish with high economic value.
Households participating in the model of raising eels in cement tanks are supported by the state with 100% of the cost of buying eel fry, fresh food, and medicine and chemicals to prevent and treat diseases for eels.
At the same time, the Quang Ngai Provincial Agricultural Extension Center sends technical staff to regularly monitor and provide technical guidance on eel farming throughout the eel farming process.
To help people inside and outside the model grasp the techniques of raising commercial eels in cement tanks, the Agricultural Extension Center organized training for 20 aquaculture households in Son Tinh commune.
Ms. Dinh Thi He said: After being trained in eel farming techniques, I treated the tank after construction by soaking it in alum (100g/ m2 ) twice (2 days/time), then scrubbing it clean with banana leaves, supplying and draining water 3 to 4 times combined with sun drying for 2 weeks.
Above the tank, I designed a sunshade net roof to ensure that the factors in the tank environment are always stable. I added a water tap that flows regularly to ensure enough dissolved oxygen for the eels to grow and bundled plastic pipes into bundles and put them in the tank to provide shelter for the eels.
Eels are omnivorous, eating small fish, crucian carp, tilapia, silver carp...so during the raising process, I grind fresh food before putting it on the feeding floor for the fish to eat.
At the same time, Ms. He added vitamins and digestive enzymes to the food to help increase resistance and improve the survival rate of eels.
Technical staff of the Quang Ngai Provincial Agricultural Extension Center coordinated with the Son Tay District Agricultural Service Center to periodically inspect the commercial eel farming model in cement tanks implemented in Son Tinh commune.
Thanks to strictly following the procedures instructed by the Center's technical staff, the eels grew and developed well during the farming process, without any disease. After 8 months of farming, the average weight was 0.7 kg/fish, with a survival rate of 90%.
Ms. Dinh Thi He added that the bigger the eel, the higher the economic efficiency, so she will continue to raise it for a while longer.
With the current stable selling price of eels from 550,000 VND/kg - 600,000 VND/kg. If the eels are raised for another 10 months, they will reach a weight of about 1.5 - 2 kg/eel, then the total revenue of the model will reach over 300 million VND; after deducting all expenses, the profit is nearly 100 million VND.
Based on the effectiveness of the model in 2022, this year, Ms. Dinh Thi He's family continues to raise fish on the right scale, quantity, density and size.
At the same time, Ms. He also applied the correct eel farming techniques that she had been trained in and directly experienced from the model of the previous year. Currently, the eel population is growing well, with the ability to bring about the same results as last year.
The success of the commercial eel farming model in cement tanks in Son Tinh commune, Son Tay district, Quang Ngai province contributes to diversifying local aquaculture species, opening up prospects for developing highly effective economic models, increasing income for farmers in mountainous areas.
