Thai Binh farmer pays himself high salary for raising giant flightless birds that run faster than horses

After a period of research, seeing that the market had a high demand for fruits and specialty animals, Mr. Pham Van Hanh, Dong Quang commune (Dong Hung, Thai Binh ) borrowed capital, rented fields from 4 households that did not grow rice, converted them into dragon fruit gardens and built ostrich cages.

He said: The cost of renovating the garden and building barns is about 200 million VND, but the most important thing is to learn experience, techniques of raising, planting, and caring for plants and animals so that they grow quickly, are disease-free, and bring in income right from the first batch.

Therefore, before implementing the model, I visited and learned from the experiences of some successful models in and outside the province to apply. In 2018, I started growing dragon fruit. After a year of planting, the dragon fruit garden yielded the first harvest, confirming high economic efficiency.

I boldly multiplied dragon fruit from a few dozen trees to 500 trees on an area of 1 hectare. Each year, dragon fruit yields 7-8 tons of fruit, after deducting expenses, the profit is nearly 100 million VND.

Veteran Pham Van Hanh of Dong Quang commune (Dong Hung, Thai Binh) raises ostriches for high economic efficiency.

After several years of investing in raising pigs, chickens, and ducks that were affected by disease and were not profitable, Mr. Hanh switched to raising ostriches, which were raised by few people but had high economic value.

According to him, the difficulty for breeders is that the price of ostriches is quite expensive, 2 million VND/bird, but in return, this animal is easy to raise because the main food is vegetables, grass, bran, corn, and rice that are readily available in the house and garden, and the waste causes less environmental pollution than pig farming.

Ostriches have high resistance, just need to be fully vaccinated when young, clean the barn, feed grass and vegetables when young, feed pellets at 6 months, from the 9th month onwards feed corn.

On average, ostriches gain about 10kg per month. Ostrich meat is soft, low in fat, has a delicious flavor, and can be prepared in many dishes such as stir-fried, grilled, boiled, steamed, and made into soup..., so the consumer market is quite large.

In the first batch, Mr. Hanh tested raising 20 ostriches in a 200m2 barn and yard. Thanks to proper care, his family's ostriches grew quickly and were not infected with disease.

After 11 months to 1 year of raising ostriches that weigh 70kg to over 100kg/bird, they can be sold. During the year, Mr. Hanh sold the entire flock, earning nearly 200 million VND, which is the family's highest source of income.

Veteran Pham Van Hanh develops a dragon fruit growing model.

From the initial success, he has restored the herd, increasing the number of ostriches to 25, all of which are growing well. In addition, on the farm, Mr. Hanh also built a barn to raise 1,000 chickens and ducks.

Mr. Hanh has just accumulated more than 1 hectare of ineffective rice fields. On that area, he will plant dragon fruit, Thai custard apple trees and dig 4 ponds to raise apple snails.

In addition, he will research ostrich incubation to have a source of quality ostrich breeds for his family farm, reduce input costs, and at the same time provide them to other families to develop livestock farming.

Mr. Vu Cong Uan, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Dong Quang commune, said: Member Pham Van Hanh is a person who dares to think, dares to do, and is a pioneer in growing dragon fruit and raising ostriches in the locality.

Although he was a pioneer, he was eager to learn to improve his farming and livestock raising techniques, so he succeeded with his transformation model. This is the model we are promoting, encouraging members to learn and replicate to get rich.

Ostriches are the largest and heaviest living birds on Earth. Despite their enormous size, they can run at speeds of 70 km/h and even make five-meter jumps.
