Visiting the chicken farming model of Mr. Hoang Van Tam, in Ban Quan village, Quang Trung commune, Binh Gia district, before our eyes were thousands of golden-feathered chickens looking for food under the canopy of ancient star anise trees.
Talking to us, Mr. Hoang Van Tam happily said: My family is raising over 1,000 live castrated chickens according to the semi-free range model in the family's anise garden. After 4 months of care, the chickens have developed well, with an average weight of 2.5-3kg. When the chickens are 7 months old, they will be sold, with the output purchase price committed by Thanh Loc Cooperative at 140,000 VND/kg, expected to bring my family a good income.
Mr. Luong Van Quy's family in Ban Quan village is also raising 1,500 chickens in a semi-free range model under the canopy of the anise tree. Mr. Luong Van Quy shared: At first, because he had never raised such a large number of chickens before, he had no experience, and his family had not applied the technical process of care and disease prevention well, especially the limitation in cleaning the barn, leading to uneven development of the chickens and a high rate of disease in the early stages. Thanks to the dedicated guidance of specialized staff, the flock of chickens has developed stably with an average weight of 3kg-3.5kg/chicken.
Chickens are raised for free-range grazing under the canopy of anise forests, so in addition to being fed corn, bran, and banana trees, they can also take advantage of fresh food sources such as insects and natural grass. Diseases rarely occur and investment costs are lower than caged chickens. The meat quality is firm and delicious, and is popular in the market.
The project of raising free-range chickens under the canopy of aniseed forests is being implemented by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Gia district in coordination with the People's Committee of Quang Trung commune and Thanh Loc Cooperative according to the linkage chain in Quang Trung commune in 2024.
Mr. Vi Van Thuyet, Vice Chairman of Quang Trung Commune People's Committee shared: When the project was implemented, the Party Committee and the commune government focused on propaganda, mobilizing people to participate, and assigned officials to be in charge of the project. Currently, the chicken flocks of 6 households participating in the project are all developing well. Hopefully, the model will be replicated in the commune in the future. In the first phase, the commune provided 4,100 castrated roosters, a native breed of Loc Binh district, Lang Son province, and 23,370 kg of animal feed, veterinary medicine, etc. to 6 households of the Nung ethnic group participating in the project.
Previously, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development organized for households participating in the project to visit and study the model in Loc Binh district, coordinated with Thanh Loc Cooperative to organize 2 training sessions, and sent technical staff directly to each household to guide the livestock farming process during the implementation.
Mr. Nong Van Dat, technical officer of Thanh Loc Cooperative, said: Since the project was implemented, the Cooperative has always closely followed the locality, guiding people on chicken raising techniques, especially veterinary care in the early stages... In the following period, the Cooperative will continue to accompany people in caring for and purchasing 100% of the products, which are castrated chickens, with a committed price of 140,000 VND/kg.
Evaluating the project, Ms. Hoang Thi Anh, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Gia district said: In order for the model to be effectively implemented, the specialized department coordinates with the commune to promote and raise awareness among the people; closely coordinate, inspect, monitor and urge livestock households to implement well so that the model achieves results, bringing income to the people themselves; especially to enhance the responsibility of livestock households to follow their commitments, avoid losses in investment capital, and serve as a basis for implementing the value chain in the following years in the district.
"The project of raising chickens under the canopy of anise forests, through the implementation steps, people have realized the value of the model, the investment benefits of the State and the chain connection to guarantee the people when there are products," Ms. Hoang Thi Anh added.
The model of raising chickens for free-range under the canopy of star anise forest in Quang Trung commune has been and is a new direction for people to develop the economy, eliminate hunger and reduce poverty. With the quality of free-range chickens, the food source has medicinal ingredients of star anise leaves and star anise petals, will create delicious chicken quality, becoming a truly different model in the whole Lang Son province. Thereby, it will help farmers reduce poverty, rise up to become rich on their homeland.
