Many agricultural extension models such as raising Bach Thao goats, raising black apple snails, raising frogs and raising hybrid wild boars in Da Teh district (Lam Dong province) are opening up many prospects for local people to replicate, develop the economy and become rich.

Raising Bach Thao goats for high income

In early 2023, we went to Village 4, Quang Tri commune to visit the closed Bach Thao goat farming model of Mr. Dang Van Vinh's family.

While busy cutting grass for his herd of more than 100 goats, Mr. Vinh shared that previously, like many other households in the locality, his family's main source of income relied on more than 4 sao of mulberry growing and silkworm raising.

In addition, the family also raises a pair of cows to earn extra income to cover living expenses and take care of the children's education. Working hard all year round, but the family's economy is only at a fairly average level.

In mid-2021, the opportunity came to his family when he participated in a training course on science and technology transfer and restructuring of crops and livestock organized by the Department of Agriculture of Da Teh district.

Through the training course, realizing that the closed breeding model of Bach Thao goats is suitable for family conditions, Mr. Vinh boldly registered to develop a pilot model.

With support of 35 million VND, along with accumulated capital, he invested in building a barn and started his business with 20 Bach Thao goats. While raising and accumulating experience, up to now, his family has expanded the goat herd to more than 100 goats; at the same time, has sold more than 30 adult goats.

The closed Bach Thao goat farming model of Mr. Dang Van Vinh's family (Quang Tri commune, Da Teh district (Lam Dong province)) is bringing high economic efficiency.

“From the results, my family decided to develop a goat herd in a closed-confinement model, so I converted 2 acres of mulberry land to grass to ensure a food source for the goats.

Thanks to that, the goats are always healthy and reproduce regularly, almost disease-free. Currently, I am building more barns to expand the breeding herd to 200 - 250 goats," Mr. Vinh shared.

Mr. Dang Sy Tin - Chairman of Quang Tri Commune People's Committee said: "From the effectiveness of Mr. Vinh's goat raising model, up to now, 3 more households in the commune have invested in raising goats for economic development, with a scale of 20 - 30 goats/household. In the future, the locality will continue to assess households that meet the conditions to have directions to support and encourage people to replicate this model."

More new livestock models, better income prospects

Along with the Bach Thao goat farming model, recently, Da Teh district has also piloted for people to develop many new livestock models such as black apple snail farming, wild boar farming and frog farming.

The black apple snail farming model (stuffed snail) was supported by Da Teh district to be piloted in a number of households in the communes of Quoc Oai, An Nhon and Da Lay. Up to now, the models are developing well, bringing high efficiency beyond the people's expectations.

Mr. Dang Dinh Hong in Ha Tay village (Quoc Oai commune) said that previously, his family's pond mainly raised grass carp and tilapia, but the economic efficiency was not high. At the end of 2021, with local support capital, he planted 2 cages of apple snails in the pond.

Currently, he has expanded his farm to 4 cages of apple snails with tens of thousands of snails. 1 kg of meat apple snails is sold for 70 - 75 thousand VND; newly hatched apple snails cost 350 - 400 VND/snail.

According to Mr. Hong, raising apple snails is very simple, the food mainly uses available things such as cassava, vegetables, and jackfruit fibers, so there is almost no cost for care.

In particular, apple snails only need to invest in buying seeds once and then multiply themselves, so they are very suitable for the actual conditions of people in rural areas with available ponds.

In addition to raising apple snails, Mr. Hong's family also invested in raising 2 more frog cages. According to calculations, after deducting expenses, this year, Mr. Hong's family earned a profit of about 80 - 100 million VND from raising apple snails and frogs.

Mr. Nguyen Manh Tuan - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of An Nhon commune said that from the model of Mr. Hong's family, up to now, the locality has expanded it to 3 households in the area to develop apple snail farming; at the same time, surveying to continue supporting people to expand.

Currently, the hybrid wild boar breeding model of Mr. K'Kiem and Ms. Ka Bieu's family in To Lan village (An Nhon commune) is opening up a new and effective breeding direction for people to replicate. After more than 1 year, from 5 breeding pigs, up to now, Mr. K'Kiem's family has expanded the wild boar herd to more than 20 pigs; at the same time, selling 12 breeding pigs earned more than 50 million VND.

Mr. Pham Xuan Tien - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Da Teh district, Lam Dong province said: "After a pilot period, the models of raising Bach Thao goats, apple snails, frogs and wild boars have initially brought positive signals.

The models all show adaptation to the local natural and environmental conditions, so there is great potential for replication among the people. In the near future, we will re-survey the natural conditions of each commune and town in the area to have a direction to support people in developing these models in the direction of goods."
