Techniques for restoring flooded rice plants

In Ninh Binh province, heavy rains lasted from July 13 to 22, causing nearly 6,200 hectares of newly planted rice to be deeply submerged under water. In addition, the rains caused by storm No. 2 further increased the flooding situation, many rice areas were unable to recover and had to be replanted.

To focus on promptly overcoming the impact caused by heavy rains and ensuring the completion of the 2024 crop production plan, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ninh Binh province requested districts and cities to urgently guide people on technical measures to restore production.

Specifically, for rice, areas that have not been planted will be drained, land preparation will be focused, planting will be accelerated, and the planting progress will be strived to be completed by July 2024.

In particular, flooded rice areas that can recover after the water recedes should be cleaned, excess seedlings and spare seedlings should be used to ensure density. Farmers should absolutely not apply nitrogen fertilizer or fertilizers with nitrogen content immediately.

After 2-3 days, add 5-7 kg of superphosphate/sao to stimulate root growth, helping the plant recover quickly. When the plant has new leaves, add 2-3 kg of urea fertilizer/sao. Also, closely monitor and promptly prevent golden apple snails, harmful rats, etc.

For newly sown rice areas that are crowded, have their seedlings washed away, or newly planted rice areas that are flooded and cannot recover, people are instructed to proactively use short-term varieties such as Khang Dan 18, Bac Thom No. 7, QR1, etc. to replant.

Due to the forecast of continued rain, localities should limit the use of direct sowing, focusing on using the seedling sowing method for planting, striving to plant the entire area as planned.

For early-season rice areas that are less affected by flooding, farmers need to take advantage of favorable weather and focus on fertilizing so that the rice plants can tiller and grow and develop smoothly.

Rice is planted wherever the water recedes.

According to information from the Irrigation Department (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ninh Binh province), in recent days, more than 200 pumps at all pumping stations have been operating at full capacity, and many works and culverts under the dike have also been put into operation.

In addition, due to difficult conditions, many cooperatives and farmers had to use additional field pumping stations, electric pumps, and oil pumps to save rice. As a result, as of July 25, the entire Ninh Binh province had basically drained almost all flooded areas.

On the morning of July 28, speaking with Dan Viet, Mr. Vu Van Tan, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Kim Son district, said: "Heavy rains in recent days have caused more than 2,500 hectares of summer-autumn rice in the district to be flooded, about 25% of the rice area saved.

Up to this point, we are still actively saving the rice plants. As the water in the fields recedes, we are instructing people to replant to make it in time for the harvest season."

Mr. Nguyen Duy Khuong, Director of Bach Cu Cooperative, informed: Most of the cooperative's fields are in low-lying areas, often flooded. This crop, the cooperative planted nearly 200 hectares of rice, but only 20 hectares were saved, the rest were completely lost.

Taking advantage of the mild sunshine, Ms. Pham Thi Mui (Dong Phu village, Bach Cu Cooperative) went out to check her family's newly sown rice fields. Ms. Mui said: "3 sao of rice in the highland area can still be saved, but 1 mau in the lowland area is deeply flooded."

Mrs. Mui said that the family's rice fields were deeply flooded and the possibility of recovery was impossible. Every plant was broken and the roots could not grow anymore.

It is forecasted that in the coming time, the North will likely receive more widespread heavy rains in late July or early August. Therefore, it requires the agricultural sector, localities and farmers to closely monitor weather developments, proactively and be ready with measures to respond to adverse developments caused by weather and pests.
