Defeating Dominik Koepfer (Germany) 7-5, 6-3, Novak Djokovic has moved a little closer to his ambition of "hunting for gold" at the Paris Olympics arena. Now, he will face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals of the men's singles tennis, the match is scheduled to take place tomorrow afternoon, Thursday 1-8.
The Serbian is eager to add another Olympic gold medal to his vast collection of titles and awards, which includes 24 Grand Slam titles, 40 Masters 1,000 titles and an Olympic bronze medal in Beijing.
“It’s an honor to represent my country at the Olympics. It’s an incredible sporting event. We play every year at Roland Garros, but the crowd, the atmosphere, the colours, everything is completely different,” Djokovic said.
“The Roland Garros crowd in particular is very knowledgeable and very passionate about tennis. But the Olympic crowd is different. People come from all over the world to support their athletes, I think there are a lot of different countries and nationalities.”
“It’s great to see all this. We’re all celebrating sport and I’m happy to still be here,” Djokovic said as he edged closer to the quarter-finals, with the ambition of winning his first gold medal.
Djokovic's next opponent is "familiar" Tsitsipas. Tsitsipas defeated Sebastian Baez (Argentina) 7-5, 6-1 in another third round match that took place earlier today afternoon. In the past, Djokovic has won 11/13 times against the Greek opponent.
Meanwhile, "Spain's Golden Hope" - Carlos Alcaraz also won a ticket to the quarter-finals when the 21-year-old defeated Roman Safiullin (Russia) with a score of 6-4, 6-2. In the quarter-finals, Alcaraz will play Taylor Fritz (USA).
*In women's boxing , Chantelle Reid (England) just surprisingly lost to Khadija Mardi (Morocco) in the 75 kg weight class (heavyweight class for women's boxing) with a score of 2-3 in the opening round, round of 16.
Reid has become the fifth British boxer to be eliminated from the Paris Olympics in a row. It is clear that, just three years after their brilliant performance in Tokyo, where British boxing won six medals in total (including two gold), they are reeling from the events.
Despite the defeat, Reid said the mood of the British boxing team was not dampened by the loss of one “survivor” boxer, Lewis Richardson: “We’re all very supportive of each other. We’re always there for each other, we’re still a close-knit team.”
*In women's basketball , Megan Gustafson continued to shine for the Spanish team, scoring 18 points and grabbing 13 rebounds to help her team beat Puerto Rico by a 63-63 margin.
This is the second consecutive time at the Paris Olympics that the Spanish basketball team has defeated their opponents by a very fragile margin of only 1 point. Previously, in the opening match, they also defeated the Chinese team with a score of 90-89 in overtime.
In Group A, Serbia is still the leading team with 2 wins and a very large score difference of +25. They also just defeated China with a victory of 81-59; in which, the black-American point guard - Ms. Yvonne Anderson scored 15 points and had 6 assists.
