With support from Farmers' Associations at all levels, people in Khanh Cong commune (Yen Khanh district) are gradually changing their farming habits, applying many good models and practices to production, moving towards green, environmentally friendly agriculture.

In early June this year, Mr. Pham The Luan (Hamlet 15, Khanh Cong Commune) attended a training course of the Provincial Farmers' Association on some environmentally friendly waste treatment methods. Realizing the many benefits of these methods such as ease of application, cost savings and environmental protection, Mr. Luan applied raising calcium worms, earthworms and raising chickens on biological bedding to his family's model.

Mr. Luan shared: "Previously, my family raised chickens in the traditional way, letting them roam freely in the garden and cleaning them every day. After attending the training course, I switched to raising chickens on biological bedding, along with raising calcium worms and earthworms as chicken feed. During the process of switching to raising chickens on biological bedding, I received technical guidance from the Farmers' Association at all levels, and financial support for repairing barns and biological products.

Making biological bedding is relatively simple, I can take advantage of crop by-products such as straw, tree trunks, branches, leaves, sawdust and spray microbial yeast solution. The microbial yeast system helps decompose urine and feces, limit bad odors, inhibit and destroy the growth of harmful microorganisms.

This is the second batch of chickens that Mr. Luan has applied this farming method and it has shown clear results. The chickens are healthy, grow well, have few diseases, the coop is clean, no longer has the bad smell like before, the chicken manure after cleaning the bedding is a very good source of fertilizer for plants.

In addition, Mr. Luan also raises calcium worms and earthworms for animal feed. Calcium worms and earthworms use animal waste and vegetable waste as food. The mature worms and cocoons of worms and earthworms then become food for poultry.

Raising calcium worms and earthworms not only provides a source of nutritious food for livestock, but their waste is also a natural organic fertilizer, rich in nutrients suitable for all types of plants.

Mr. Luan's model is creating a closed-loop farming process, with waste and by-products from this process being the input for other production processes. According to the model owner, raising chickens on biological bedding combined with raising earthworms and calcium worms has helped his family save 40% on feed costs and reduce 60% of labor.

He is currently raising about 100 crossbred meat chickens, egg-laying chickens each batch, an average of 3 batches per year, with an estimated average weight of 3 - 4kg/chicken, with the current selling price of 120,000 - 150,000 VND/kg, the model helps the family improve their income significantly.

Mr. Le Van Luan (Hamlet 3, Khanh Cong Commune) uses manure from biological bedding in chicken farming to grow vegetables.

Not only Mr. Pham The Luan's family, many farming households in Khanh Cong commune are gradually switching to new, environmentally friendly farming and breeding methods, towards a green, sustainable agriculture.

In 2021, Khanh Cong is one of three localities in Yen Khanh district selected as a pilot model to implement the project "Propaganda and mobilization of farmers to treat waste in Vietnam, contributing to the international community's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions".

Comrade Do Gia Hieu, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Khanh Cong Commune shared: "After being selected as a pilot model and participating in training courses on organic waste treatment techniques, the Standing Committee of the Farmers' Association of the Commune organized 5 conferences to transfer techniques to 150 farmer members. In particular, focusing on the technique of fermenting crop by-products for animal feed; the technique of composting organic fertilizer from crop by-products; raising chickens on biological bedding; raising calcium worms and earthworms to treat livestock manure.

In addition, farmer members are also supported by the Association at all levels and the Project Management Board with biological products and a part of the funding to implement the model. Up to now, 15 members have been supported to implement the model of fermenting crop by-products for animal feed, 60 members have been supported to implement the model of composting organic fertilizer from crop by-products, 10 members have been supported to raise chickens on biological bedding and 20 members have been supported to raise calcium worms and earthworms.

After 3 years of implementation, the project has shown clear results. Previously, crop by-products, livestock and poultry manure were often not properly treated or discarded, causing waste, environmental pollution, and affecting the landscape. After being equipped with knowledge and technical training, people have changed their awareness, habits, and behaviors in converting and classifying waste.

From the initial effectiveness of the project, in the coming time, the Farmers' Association of Khanh Cong commune will continue to propagate, mobilize, and guide farmers to classify and treat organic waste, and have solutions to support households that need to develop the model. Thereby creating a change in the behavior of cadres and farmer members in environmental protection, towards a green, sustainable agriculture, contributing to the construction of a new model rural area of the locality.
