With temperatures dropping below 13 degrees Celsius, and in some places only 8.5 degrees Celsius, in recent days, Ha Tinh farmers have proactively "activated" plans to protect their livestock in order to cope with the weather.

Mr. Truong Van Thang's family in Thien No village, Cam Quan commune (Cam Xuyen) raises a large herd of cattle and poultry with a herd of 8 cows, more than 50 pigs and more than 1,500 chickens. For nearly a week now, the cold air has intensified and the temperature has dropped sharply, so Mr. Thang has proactively covered the barn, prepared food and taken disease prevention measures to ensure the health of the livestock.

Mr. Truong Van Thang in Thien No village, Cam Quan commune (Cam Xuyen) turns on an electric bulb to warm the chickens.

Mr. Truong Van Thang (Thien No village, Cam Quan commune, Cam Xuyen) shared: “Normally, I let cows, pigs and chickens roam freely on my farm of more than 7 hectares. However, the weather has been very cold these past few days, so I have proactively kept livestock and poultry in captivity. I have also covered the barns with tarpaulins and nets; for the chickens, I have turned on electric lights to keep them warm. In addition to the usual roughage, I also add nutritious minerals to increase the resistance of the livestock.”

The whole Cam Xuyen district currently has more than 4,000 buffaloes and cows; over 50,000 pigs and more than 1 million poultry. To ensure the livestock develop and grow well at this time, the agricultural sector of Cam Xuyen district has assigned specialized staff to each commune to urge and guide households to apply cold prevention measures for livestock and poultry such as: strengthening livestock barns to ensure veterinary hygiene conditions, disease safety and prevention of hunger and cold. Fully prepare tools and supplies to warm livestock when severe cold occurs.

People in Cam Xuyen district proactively prepare food reserves for cattle to fight hunger during cold days.

Compared to the plains, the weather in mountainous districts such as Huong Son, Huong Khe, Vu Quang is even more severe. In recent days, the temperature has remained low, commonly between 11 and 13 degrees Celsius.

Huong Khe is a locality with a large number of livestock, with a total herd of nearly 36,000 buffaloes and cows and a herd of more than 1,100 deer. To proactively prevent hunger, cold and diseases for livestock, Huong Khe district has directed localities, departments and functional agencies to guide people in implementing solutions. Thanks to widespread propaganda, people have proactively prevented hunger and cold for livestock.

Mr. Tran Huu Khan in Trung Tien village, Dien My commune (Huong Khe) shared: “My family raises 15 cows. Currently, the cows are completely kept in captivity instead of being let loose in the forest like before. Through weather monitoring, we have proactively stocked up on rough, green food sources such as straw, corn, and elephant grass. During cold days, the cows are supplemented with concentrated food such as rice bran, corn flour mixed with banana tree trunks and salt to increase resistance. Before that, the family also had time to cover the barn to protect the cows from the cold and wind. Thanks to that, our cows as well as those of other households in the village are being well cared for and protected from the cold weather.”

Leaders of Huong Khe district inspected and urged the work of preventing and fighting cold for livestock in the area.

According to statistics, the province currently has a total herd of buffalo and cows estimated at 240,000; a herd of pigs at 400,000 and 10 million poultry. In the face of complicated weather conditions, to ensure the safety of livestock, the specialized sector has proactively issued dispatches on strengthening the prevention of hunger, cold and disease for livestock. Accordingly, specific instructions are given on cold prevention solutions for each type of livestock, how to cover barns, supplement food... In particular, recommendations are made on cold prevention solutions for livestock that are often grazed such as buffalo and cows...

To avoid complacency in the face of complicated weather developments, the unit has promptly issued a document directing localities to implement cold-proof solutions for livestock. Accordingly, people need to proactively ensure food supply in the barn, not let livestock go hungry or thirsty; confine livestock in the barn, do not graze buffaloes and cows when the temperature drops below 13 degrees Celsius; keep the barn floor dry, cover it to avoid drafts, make coats to keep it closed, keep it warm, and create a heat source for livestock; clean, disinfect, and sterilize barns; closely inspect and monitor livestock to prevent disease outbreaks.
