High income from corn growing
In the winter corn crop of 2023 and early 2024, for the first time, farmers in Thuan Son commune (Do Luong) planted sweet corn on alluvial land along the Lam River. When the sweet corn was ready for harvest (in January 2024), although the weather was quite cold and the roads were still muddy, people were still excited to mobilize human resources and machinery to go to the fields to harvest corn.

Ms. Hoang Thi Loan in Thuan Phu hamlet has just arranged the plump, round corn kernels transported from the field into prepared bags. Ms. Loan said: “I grow more than 3 sao of sweet corn, and in the past two days I have actively harvested about 400 kg of fresh corn. The company has purchased the harvested corn right at the field, so I am very excited, I have money right away and “profit” by adding green feed for livestock. In a few days, we will cut down the corn plants to ferment as feed for cattle.”
At the sweet corn purchasing point of the company that buys products for farmers in Thuan Son commune, besides Ms. Loan, there are dozens of other households happily weighing corn to receive money. Mr. Nguyen The Ba is counting the money that has just been transferred, equivalent to 30 bags of corn. Mr. Ba said that this is the first sweet corn crop so he only grows 1 sao, next year he will expand the sweet corn area because the economic efficiency is quite high.

Mr. Nguyen Van Loi - Secretary of the Commune Party Committee said that corn grown on alluvial land along the river in Thuan Son Commune brings high economic efficiency. With the current purchase price of sweet corn from 4.5 - 4.8 thousand VND/kg, each hectare yields about 5 tons, bringing people an income of about 80 million VND.
Promoting the effectiveness of alluvial land
On the way "following" the officials of Thuan Son Commune People's Committee to the alluvial land to grasp the situation of people harvesting sweet corn. We met Mr. Phan Ba Chinh who was on his way to transport cabbage to wholesale for small traders. Mr. Chinh said that this year's sweet corn crop brought in an income of 15 million VND. In addition, he also has a regular source of income from growing seasonal vegetables for decades, and this crop is the main source of income for his family. In recent years, winter vegetables and fruits have been in good season, squash and pumpkin are fresh, vegetables are lush green, and around Tet and after Tet, his family still has vegetables to sell thanks to growing vermicelli.

Like Mr. Chinh's family, dozens of households in Thuan Son commune have gradually become well-off thanks to production on fertile alluvial land, many households have escaped poverty such as Ms. Tran Thi Chuyen's family in Thuan Phu hamlet. Ms. Tran Thi Chuyen said that before the alluvial land was invested in growing seasonal squash and cucumbers, her family was poor, struggling to raise 3 children to go to school.
“Thanks to the alluvial land, from 5 hectares of contracted land for growing cucumbers and squash, after a few years we had the capital to expand the scale of vegetable growing to 20 hectares, enough seasonal vegetables and fruits to supply the kitchens of some neighboring industrial parks, and wholesale and retail at local markets, and import to schools in the district. The production scale increased so the family hired 5-6 more workers to help with wages of 150,000 - 200,000 VND/day. After deducting expenses, the alluvial land also brings the family more than 100 million VND each year,” said Ms. Chuyen.

Regarding the economic efficiency of the alluvial land of Thuan Son commune, Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee Nguyen Van Nam said that the total corn area of the commune is 185 hectares, of which 110.8 hectares are winter corn; 79 hectares are spring corn; and 10 hectares are summer corn. In addition, people also grow 50 hectares of peanuts, yielding 24 quintals/hectare, with an output of 72 tons. 32 hectares of various vegetables including squash, pumpkin, cucumber, and vegetables such as cabbage, kohlrabi, sweet cabbage, etc. also bring significant income to farmers.
To continue to encourage and support people to effectively exploit the alluvial land economy, Thuan Son commune has repaired canals, intra-field and inter-hamlet roads for many years, prioritizing roads to alluvial fields. In 2023, the upgrading and repair of roads and bridges from Va dam to the commune health station dike was completed with a total cost of nearly 7 billion VND; 6,806,187,000 VND; Khe Na canal phase 2, 135m long, nearly 200 million VND.
