A meeting of Israel's war cabinet convened by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on April 14.

The Times of Israel reported on the evening of April 15 that Israel's war cabinet had just finished a meeting to discuss how to retaliate against Iran's attack, after discussing a number of options.

Accordingly, all options are retaliation "painful" for Iran, but not ignite a regional war. War cabinet members are aiming to choose a response that will not be blocked by the US.

Channel 12 reported without citing sources that Israel wanted to act in coordination with the US. However, the US has previously made it clear that it would not join Israel in any direct attack on Iran.

On the night of April 13 (local time), Iran launched about 30 cruise missiles, 120 ballistic missiles and 170 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to attack Israel. Previously, Iran accused Israel of attacking Iranian diplomatic facilities in Syria on April 1, while Israel did not admit it.

In the Iranian attack, almost all missiles and drones were intercepted, according to the Israeli military and the White House. The US, UK and Jordan also participated in stopping the attack.

CNN quoted US Secretary of State Antony Blinken as saying that the US spent 36 hours "coordinating a diplomatic response to try to prevent escalation" of the situation after Iran's attack.

Mr Blinken said he had been in contact with partners in the region “and will continue to do so in the hours and days ahead”.

“We do not seek escalation but will continue to support Israel’s defense and protect our personnel in the region,” he said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian threatened on April 15 that his country would react more strongly than before if Israel retaliated, according to The Guardian .

In another development, CNN on April 15 quoted two Israeli sources as saying that the country planned to carry out the first step of its ground campaign in the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, but postponed it to consider its response to Iran's attack.

The Israeli Air Force had planned to drop leaflets in several areas of Rafah on April 15. An Israeli official said the country was still determined to carry out a ground operation in Rafah, although the deadline for evacuation and the operation was not clear.

The Israeli military declined to comment.
