Quang Ngai: Workers at a factory in Dung Quat Economic Zone were welding and cutting while repairing a ship, sparks came into contact with leaked fuel, causing an explosion and fire, 9 people were burned on the afternoon of November 3.
At around 2 p.m., a group of employees from the Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industry Company’s pipe workshop in Binh Son District were welding and cutting at the bottom of the Legend ship’s pump room when a fire broke out. The fire flared up fiercely, and some workers in the Void tank were unable to escape in time.

Nine workers with burns were transferred to Quang Nam Central General Hospital in Nui Thanh District, 40 km from the scene of the incident. The hospital said that upon admission, three people had severe burns and six had less severe burns. All victims were transferred to a hospital in Da Nang.
Doctor Le Van Muoi, head of the Danang Hospital's burn team, said three people with severe burns on 70-80% of their bodies were transferred to the intensive care unit. One case had both burns and compartment compression (edema), so the surgical team had to be mobilized to coordinate with the burn doctor. The remaining victims had burns on 5-70% of their bodies and were transferred to the Burn Surgery Department.

Mr. Huynh Tan Binh, Head of the Environmental Health and Safety Department (Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industry Company), said that the initial cause was that the oil pipeline valve leaked into the tank. At that time, workers were welding and cutting, creating sparks that met the fuel, causing the incident.
Dung Quat Economic Zone requested the company to specifically report the incident and will soon set up an inspection team at construction sites and factories in the economic zone.
Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industry Company was established in 2006, formerly belonging to Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group, specializing in shipbuilding and ship repair. In 2010, the company was transferred to the Oil and Gas Group.
