Efforts to promote new round of ceasefire talks in Gaza

A new round of talks aimed at reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip resumed in the Qatari capital Doha on the afternoon of August 15 (local time), with the participation of officials from Israel, Qatar, the United States and Egypt. The Islamic movement Hamas announced that it would not participate in this round of negotiations.

There are many disagreements.

This is the latest effort by mediating countries to achieve the ultimate goal of ending the conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Mediterranean coastal strip since October last year.

According to a source, Israeli Intelligence Director David Barnea, CIA Director William Burns, his Egyptian counterpart Abbas Kamel and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani attended the closed-door meeting.

This round of talks took place amid international concerns about the risk of further conflict spreading in the Middle East as Iran announced it would respond to Israel after Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an airstrike in Tehran on July 31.

Many countries have been deploying diplomatic efforts to prevent this risk. The US has also increased its military presence in the Middle East by sending more planes, warships and submarines to the region to prevent the risk of attacks. The US hopes that reaching a ceasefire agreement in Gaza will be able to "defuse" tensions in the Middle East.

However, on the eve of this new round of negotiations, on August 14, the Hamas Islamist movement announced that it would not participate and told the mediators that if Israel made a serious proposal in line with Hamas' previous proposals, the group would continue to participate in the negotiations.

Hamas' position is to oppose any US or Israeli involvement in the Gaza Strip after the conflict ends. Mediators plan to consult with Hamas members in Doha after the round of talks concludes.

The parties involved are currently pushing for negotiations, including the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinians held in Israel. From Washington, the White House on August 15 called on all parties involved in the Doha talks to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, and called on both Israel and Hamas to make concessions to achieve such a goal.

Gaza under heavy attack

The Times of Israel reported that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) attacked more than 30 locations in Gaza on August 15. According to Al Jazeera, Israeli military aircraft attacked the city of Hamad while artillery shelled residential buildings in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip.

On the same day, the Middle East Monitor reported that the war in Gaza was one of the bloodiest wars of the 21st century, claiming the lives of tens of thousands of Palestinians. After 313 days of fighting, 39,965 people were killed, 92,294 were injured, and 11,000 were missing.

Earlier on August 14, the Hamas-run Gaza Media Office said that at least 1,000 people have died in the Gaza Strip due to the Israeli army closing the Rafah border crossing for more than 100 days. The remaining people are also facing the risk of death due to lack of access to medical services.
