Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on December 9 that efforts to restore the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) - also known as the 2015 nuclear deal - were becoming increasingly futile.

Speaking at Tehran University, the Iranian foreign minister stressed: “Because Iran's red lines are sometimes ignored by the other side, we currently have no intention of returning to the deal.

Of course, this does not mean that we have set aside the deal. If the deal serves Iran's interests, we will accept it with all its flaws."

Previously, on September 24, the Iranian Foreign Ministry quoted Mr. Amir-Abdollahian as declaring that Tehran is ready to return to full compliance with the Islamic Republic's commitments in the JCPOA, if other parties to the agreement are also ready to take similar actions.

Iran's top diplomat also praised productive consultations between Tehran and the UN Secretary-General on efforts to revive the JCPOA.

Iran signed the JCPOA with world powers in July 2015, under which Tehran agreed to limit its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

However, the US withdrew from the deal in May 2018 and reimposed unilateral sanctions on Iran, forcing Tehran to abandon some of its nuclear commitments under the JCPOA.

Negotiations to revive the deal were launched in April 2021 in the Austrian capital Vienna. Although the parties have gone through several rounds of negotiations, no significant breakthrough has been achieved since the last round ended in August 2022.
