According to VGC , the Nintendo Switch has just become the best-selling console in the UK for the month of May. This lead was boosted by the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom .
According to GfK data published on GamesIndustry.biz, Switch sales actually dropped 5% compared to April, but when the special edition Zelda-themed Switch OLED console was released, sales increased 28% compared to May 2022.
The Zelda version of the OLED Switch accounted for nearly 35% of total Switch sales in May, helping Nintendo's console end the PlayStation 5's four-month lead.
Zelda Edition OLED Switch Has Been a Huge Boost to Nintendo Sales
PlayStation 5 sales fell 23% from April, the first time this year that Sony's console sales have fallen below the same period in 2022. Meanwhile, Xbox Series X/S sales fell 10% from April and were also down year-over-year.
Console sales are up 16.6% year-to-date, with PS5 sales up 81%, Switch sales down 8%, and Xbox Series X/S sales down 19%.
On the software front, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was the best-selling game of May, based on physical sales alone (Nintendo is currently the only major games company that doesn’t share digital sales data). Nintendo’s new game is the third best-selling game of all time in the UK, behind 2017’s Breath of the Wild and 2006’s Twilight Princess .
Hogwarts Legacy debuted at number 2 on the monthly software charts after its release for PS4 and Xbox One in May.
