With many achievements in research, composition and performance, Ha Tinh artisans and artists share their passion for preserving and spreading the cultural values of their homeland.
People's Artisan Nguyen Ban (born 1940): Devoting his life to preserving and promoting his homeland's heritage
Born into a Confucian family in Tien Dien town (Nghi Xuan), I lived in a cultural space imbued with tradition with Kieu verses, folk songs, and ca tru... Perhaps that is why, despite having worked in many places, I eventually returned to my hometown and worked in the cultural field. That was in 1984, when I was teaching at Nghe Tinh Art College, Nghi Xuan district asked the province to transfer me to be the Head of the district's Cultural Department. At that time, I was a bit hesitant, but when I heard the district leader say: "Nghi Xuan is the cradle of cultural heritage, but many values have been lost. You are a child of the district, have the ability, so you should return to help the locality." Thinking about my responsibility as a citizen to my hometown, I decided to return.
Taking on the role of a local cultural “commander”, I began to coordinate with the youth union, women’s union… to revive the vitality of Vi and Giam folk songs by organizing mass art competitions. The movement gradually grew, I discussed with the district Department of Education and Training to bring folk songs into schools and received positive responses.
Nghi Xuan is known as the "land of singing", including the Ty Co Dam singing troupe with famous ca tru troupes. How to restore the melodies and the ca tru singing movement in people's lives is something that always worries me. Although at this time, artists such as Phan Thi Mon, Phan Thi Nga, Nguyen Thi Xuan, Nguyen Thi Binh... are over 70 years old, when they heard us express our wishes, they all enthusiastically supported us. So on the one hand, we searched and collected ancient lyrics and melodies, on the other hand, we mobilized cadres and talented people to organize singing classes. By 1998, Nghi Xuan district had 3 generations of ca tru singers, established a ca tru club, and coordinated the organization of a national conference on ca tru Co Dam. From here, ca tru Co Dam - a precious heritage that was thought to have been lost - has strongly revived in cultural life.
After the folk songs Vi, Giam, Ca Tru, we continued to explore and restore the performance form of the Kieu play. Fortunately, we always received the enthusiastic support and companionship of the artists, so in many forms, up to now, the Kieu play has also made a strong comeback, attracting many generations to participate in composing and performing. From 2001 to now, although I have retired under the regime, I have continuously researched, composed, collected, and published dozens of books and research articles on the folk songs Vi, Giam, Ca Tru, festivals, etc. For me, preserving and spreading the values of cultural heritage is an endless inspiration, as long as I have the strength, I will continue to contribute.
Photographer Nguyen Thanh Hai (born 1971): Preserving the beauty of his homeland through each photo
I am very passionate about photography. That passion was kindled since my youth, but due to many factors, it was not until I was 47 years old that I officially entered this field. Many people often say that I started late but succeeded early, but few people know that my works are the distillation of many years. Although I have traveled to many places and taken many subjects, I still love taking pictures of my hometown Ha Tinh the most. Anywhere, a coastal village, a mountain scene, or bridges, rocks, fields, or constructions of development... all urge me to pick up the camera.
Without formal training, I had to learn by myself through many different channels and through my own works. For me, a beautiful photo is a photo that is well-composed and has a story. I take many photos, with a variety of topics, however, landscape, travel, and sports photos are still the topics that I am most passionate about. Especially with landscape photos, in addition to satisfying my hobby of traveling, I also have the opportunity to promote the beauty of my homeland and country to friends not only in the country but also to the world. My works are not brilliant or flashy but simply beautiful moments of nature and people of my homeland such as: "Dance of the sea", "A glimpse of Ke Go lake", "Season of shrimp", "Heart of the sea", "Cloudy river", "Good land, birds perch"...
I always consider photography as an emotional journey. I have put a lot of emotions and intelligence into my works and the photos themselves also bring me a lot of emotions when they are recognized by the public. Many works have been named in industry, provincial, national and international awards. I really appreciate it because it is also a channel for me to promote more widely the beauty of my homeland, the tourism potential of Ha Tinh as well as of Vietnam.
I still have many plans to create artistic photos and continue to nurture the plan to organize a personal photo exhibition "Ha Tinh through my lens". In which I will introduce the photos I took of craft villages, famous landscapes and landscapes of Ha Tinh. Further ahead is the photo exhibition "Vietnam - the places I have been to" to tell stories from many regions of the country. I continue to travel with the camera lens and firmly believe that my career is not over yet...
Meritorious Artist Hoang Ba Ngoc (born 1959): Vi and Giam folk songs have permeated his blood and flesh.
As a child of the coastal countryside of Cam Long (now Thien Cam town - Cam Xuyen), since childhood, my soul has been filled with the sound of the ocean waves and imbued with my mother's lullabies and my father's songs. Perhaps that is why, although I studied engineering and joined the army, my life was attached to the mass theater and eventually became a folk artist.
I still remember, the opportunity that brought me to the mass art stage was the meeting with the Nghe Tinh Armed Forces Mass Art Troupe - Nghe Tinh Provincial Military Command when they performed at Mat Island in 1983. During the art exchange, realizing that I had talent, the Nghe Tinh Provincial Military Command transferred me to the troupe. Here, I had the opportunity to approach and work as colleagues with famous actors at that time such as Le Thanh, Ngoc So, Minh Hue... I also proactively sought out and learned knowledge about culture, literature, art, and history to prepare for a new direction of writing lyrics for folk songs and folk songs.
Tours and training sessions have strongly stimulated my creative ability. My first work - the song "Lullaby and Soldier" was enthusiastically received by colleagues and audiences. During the 7 years of working at the Nghe Tinh People's Army Art Troupe (1984-1991) until later (from 1992) when I transferred to Ha Tinh and retired (in 2007), I continued to compose and participate in performances to serve my compatriots and soldiers. I also participated in many art festivals of the entire military region, the entire army, the entire country and won many gold, silver medals and certificates of merit.
I am proud that many of my works have won various awards and have been widely distributed. The most recent are the folk song suite “The Elderly of Hong Lam Land Obey Uncle Ho’s Teachings” and the Nghe Xam “Proud of Motherland Today” which were awarded the A prize at the National Elderly Singing Festival and the epic performance “Thien Cam 20 Years of Proud Songs” performed on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the founding of Thien Cam town in early November 2023.
Nghe Tinh Vi and Giam folk songs have been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a representative intangible heritage of humanity, a precious legacy left by our ancestors to their descendants. Spring comes, all things grow, and it is also the time when people's souls are filled with emotions. This is also the time when I absorb many new values from people and nature to nurture my soul, intelligence, and passion to continue to light the fire and spread Vi and Giam folk songs from my hometown with the artists.
Singer Nguyen Khanh Ha (born 2009): Bringing folk melodies to all corners of the world
Now, as a student of the Vocal Music Department, Vietnam National Academy of Music (Hanoi), I have never forgotten my first steps on the musical path in my childhood in my hometown of Cam Vinh (Cam Xuyen). At that time, I was a poor girl from a poor village. Thanks to my passion and talent for singing, my teachers brought me into the school's art troupe since primary school. At that time, the movement to develop Vi and Giam folk songs in schools was very strong, so the art programs I participated in also included many Vi and Giam folk songs. From knowing nothing, I gradually fell in love with the melodies of my ancestors. In particular, I was lucky to receive the attention of People's Artist Hong Luu, who taught me how to feel the songs and the vocal techniques when singing folk songs, so my singing voice has become more and more perfect.
In 2018, with the encouragement of People's Artist Hong Luu, family and school, I participated in the "The Voice Kids" contest, officially entering a major music competition. From the countryside, I came to the big city, bringing with me the values of my hometown's cultural heritage. Although I haven't had much time to practice and haven't gotten used to big stages, I am still confident in my choice of singing folk songs. In the preliminary round of the "The Voice Kids" contest, I performed the song "Come to Ha Tinh, my dear". This folk-inspired song completely won over the judges.
Although I did not win a high prize in that competition, this was the premise for me to boldly continue to participate in major programs and competitions such as: "Young Vietnamese Talents" (2019), National Excellent Team Commander Festival (2021), Children's Festival of 3 countries Vietnam - Laos - Cambodia (2021)... I have also participated in many folk singing competitions at district, provincial, inter-provincial levels... In these competitions, I have the opportunity to convey the cultural values of my homeland through my singing voice.
After becoming a student of the Vocal Department of the Vietnam National Academy of Music (in 2023), I will continue to pursue folk music. In my soul, folk music is always a solid support, flesh and blood, a source that flows forever... It is the lullaby of my mother when I was a child, the voice of my homeland, the voice of the people of Nghe An. I will try harder to contribute to preserving and bringing Vi and Giam folk songs closer to friends at home and abroad...
