According to the report of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, only 10 medical units recruited enough staff, 30 units recruited doctors but did not meet the quota and especially 13 units could not recruit doctors. Among these was Can Gio - two consecutive years "empty-handed" at the industry's largest job fair.

The fact that medical centers and health stations have difficulty recruiting doctors has been a long-standing problem, especially in outlying areas. Therefore, at the job fair, Mr. Tang Chi Thuong - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health - had a positive assessment when there were medical centers and health stations that had recruited doctors with practice certificates. Because according to Mr. Thuong, it is not simple for a medical station or health center to recruit doctors.

Why is it that despite being given all the favorable conditions with dozens of booths of medical facilities "inviting" people to work, we still cannot recruit the number of doctors as expected?

Before entering the job fair, Ms. Tran Ninh Bao Thi - Deputy Director of Can Gio District Medical Center - still predicted that it would be difficult to recruit doctors to work at the unit. Last year, the unit set a target of recruiting 18 positions but could not recruit any positions. After that, although 6 doctors were recruited, after a while 4 doctors left and now there are 2 doctors left. And last year's story continues to repeat itself this year.

"Four doctors left because the workplace did not match their orientation," said Ms. Thi.

Mr. Tang Chi Thuong also admitted that the city's health sector, especially the grassroots level, has been "thirsty" for human resources for many years. One of the reasons why public health units cannot recruit enough doctors compared to demand is because many private hospitals have opened and many young doctors have chosen to work at private hospitals.

Therefore, according to Mr. Thuong, focusing on training human resources for the health sector in terms of quantity and quality, ensuring income and career development opportunities is one of the top priorities of the health sector in Ho Chi Minh City.

Doctor Quach Hoang Viet was the only doctor who chose to work at Tan Phu Ward Medical Station, Thu Duc City, belonging to Thu Duc City Medical Center at the first job fair. About 12 doctors practiced at Thu Duc District Medical Center and Hospital this time, then all registered to work at other hospitals or continue their studies.

"I also did not think I would work here long term. However, during my internship, I felt that there was a friendly working environment, the board of directors of Thu Duc City Medical Center always created all working conditions, and my house is nearby so it is very convenient" - Viet said and announced the good news that recently the center's leaders created conditions for him to take the exam for specialty 1 at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

According to Dr. Hoang Viet, in order for grassroots units to attract young doctors, in addition to increasing salaries, it is necessary to create conditions for young doctors to go to school and work in a friendly environment...

Doctors on the base increase

Although it has not recruited 50% of the doctors needed by public health units, this year's job fair also has some positive signs such as the percentage of doctors choosing to work at medical centers out of the total number of doctors recruited from the job fair increased from 9% in 2023 to 22% in 2024. There are units that recruited few or no doctors last year, but this year they recruited more.

What is special is that after practicing at the medical stations of Thu Duc City Medical Center, 3 young doctors volunteered to continue working and staying with these medical stations.
