Many killed in major Israeli offensive in West Bank

On August 28, the Israeli army confirmed that it had conducted a major anti-terrorism operation overnight together with the Israel Security Agency (ISA) in the Jenin and Tulkarem areas of the West Bank.

"The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) has mobilized large forces since last night in the Jenin and Tul Karm refugee camps...", Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said in a post on X.

The Israeli operation involved drones, bulldozers, military-security forces, four battalions of the Israel Border Police and an elite unit of the secret army. Video obtained by CNN shows bulldozers plowing up a street in the Tulkarem construction area.

In separate statements, the armed forces of Hamas, Jihad and Fatah said their fighters detonated bombs targeting Israeli military vehicles in three West Bank areas.

Jihad said Israel was trying to expand the conflict from Gaza to the West Bank, adding that its militants used machine guns to attack Israeli troops and targeted military bulldozers with explosives.

The military wing of the Al-Quds Brigades said it had targeted and shot down an Israeli drone near Jenin. The group said its fighters were targeting Israeli forces with “a barrage of direct fire”.

Palestinian deaths were reported in the towns of Tubas and Jenin, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS). At least two of those killed in Jenin were killed by Israeli military fire. Three others were killed in a drone strike on a vehicle on the outskirts of Jenin.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said Israeli forces blocked roads leading to the public hospital in Jenin and surrounded the site.

“Dozens of patients are currently being treated in public, private and charity hospitals in Jenin, and any intrusion would directly threaten their lives and those of medical staff,” the ministry said.
