"Many of Europe's top clubs participating in the Club World Cup once doubted FIFA's ability to pay large prizes for the tournament, and expressed their unwillingness to participate. However, now they are all excited to participate and, through the association representing these teams (ECA), are demanding to receive up to 70% of the total prize, expected to be up to 1.6 billion euros," AS commented right after the tournament's group draw was completed in Miami (USA), on December 6.
Initially, FIFA President Gianni Infantino proposed to give all participating clubs 50 million euros each, along with bonuses based on results and achievements in the tournament. However, FIFA recently announced a television copyright deal with DAZN worth up to 1 billion euros, along with large commercial contracts with leading partners, helping this tournament have a total expected prize pool of up to 1.6 billion euros, according to sources from RMC (France). After realizing that FIFA has a huge source of revenue and will pay a lot of bonuses for the tournament, through the ECA, European clubs want to share a larger share of the total prize pool, with the reason that they are the teams that will generate the largest revenue of the tournament.
"The 12 top European clubs participating in the Club World Cup, including Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, PSG, Man.City, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, Juventus, Benfica, Porto and FC Salzburg, want to share about 70% of the total tournament prize money. These clubs oppose the equal distribution of the prize money (50 million euros per team), instead dividing it according to the percentage based on the club's reputation and contribution to the tournament. Next is the increased prize money based on results and performance. In which, ECA is expected to convince FIFA to divide the prize money according to their wishes. Because the attraction of the tournament or not is related to the European clubs using the best players, to increase advertising revenue on television. It is these disagreements in the distribution of prizes that have prevented FIFA from officially announcing the prize structure of the 2025 Club World Cup," AS continued.
