Russian artillery in Ukraine
Russian artillery fires on Ukraine frontline
The Ukrainian frontline town of Avdiivka is under intense artillery attack from Russia, AFP reported on October 10, citing information from Ukrainian authorities who are in control of the area.
Avdiivka, less than 10 km from the city of Donetsk, has become a target for Russian forces. So far, Ukraine has managed to hold on to this frontline town, despite constant bombing and shelling that has forced civilians to flee.
“For more than a year, (Avdiivka) has been at risk of being controlled by Russia, but now the situation is deteriorating rapidly,” said Vitaliy Barabash, head of the town administration.
On the same day, TASS quoted the Russian Defense Ministry as saying that in the past 24 hours, air defense forces destroyed 19 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) near Romanovskoye and Chervonogorka in Zaporizhzhia, Kazachyi Lageri, Novaya Kakhovka and Korsunka in Kherson.
Russian forces also claimed to have repelled four Ukrainian attacks in the Kupyansk region, killed 60 Ukrainian soldiers in Krasny Liman and repelled attacks in Donetsk and Kherson.
Russia also detected the Ukrainian army moving at least 40 armored vehicles, including tanks and armored personnel carriers, to the town of Orekhov in Zaporizhzhia.
It is unclear what Ukrainian forces are planning here.
Air Force General Charles Q. Brown, new Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff
US general's tour
Air Force General Charles Q. Brown, who took over as Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff late last month, arrived in Brussels (Belgium) on October 10 to attend a meeting of the Ukraine Contact Group.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was also present, Reuters reported.
The general faces the challenging task of reassuring allies that the US remains committed to supporting Ukraine, even as the US House of Representatives remains in a state of "headless snake" after the Speaker was removed from office.
The situation was further complicated by the escalation of the Hamas-Israel conflict, forcing Washington to divide its support.
The Biden administration has repeatedly stressed its commitment to support Ukraine and will announce a new arms aid package for Kyiv as military leaders meet in Brussels.
"Over the next few days, I will be attending meetings to reassure our partners," General Brown said, adding that US allies are concerned about the developments at the Capitol.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis
Ukraine-Romania discuss security and grain corridor
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed security and the grain corridor with his Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis in Bucharest on October 10, after Russia shelled ports on Ukraine's Danube River near the Romanian border.
In his first visit to the NATO member state since the outbreak of hostilities, Mr Zelensky stressed that attacks near the border "are a threat, not only to Ukraine".
At a joint press conference, Mr. Zelensky said the two discussed air defense, but did not provide further details. However, he revealed that the two sides had agreed to organize training for Ukrainian pilots to fly F-16s in Romania.
"We discussed ways to speed up these training programs," Zelensky said.
Besides security, Mr. Zelensky and Mr. Iohannis also discussed plans to increase Ukrainian grain exports through Romania.
"The grain corridor from Ukraine through Moldova to Romania will soon be operational," Zelensky said.
President Iohannis estimates that nearly 60% of Ukraine's grain exports currently transit through Romania.
Also on October 10, Germany announced a new aid package worth about 1 billion euros for Ukraine, focusing on air defense systems, weapons of all kinds and infantry vehicles.
