On November 6, the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam announced that two Vietnamese people will be awarded the Order of the Rising Sun in the fall of 2023.
Among them, former National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan was awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, first class.
Former Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Doan Xuan Hung was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star.
The Japanese government decided to award medals to the two people for their contributions to strengthening relations and friendship between Japan and Vietnam.
The Order of the Rising Sun has a history of nearly 150 years since the Meiji era. This order is divided into many levels and names with accompanying items.
The Grand Cross of the Order of the Rising Sun, First Class, is the highest rank. Japan has also awarded many Orders of the Rising Sun at various levels to Vietnamese individuals who have made significant contributions to bilateral relations in recent times.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan served as Chairwoman of the National Assembly from July 2016 to March 2021. During this time, she received and discussed with senior Japanese leaders many measures to promote relations between the two countries.
One example is the state visit to Vietnam by Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko in March 2017.
In particular, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan emphasized that Vietnam and Japan have a long-standing historical relationship, the two peoples are culturally close, and share many common values and concerns.
In addition, during her time as Chairwoman of the National Assembly, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan also received Prime Minister Abe Shinzo and Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.
In August 2015, when she was Vice President of the National Assembly, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan also made an official visit to Japan.

Mr. Doan Xuan Hung served as Vietnam's Ambassador to Japan from 2011 to 2015. His tenure saw the two countries establish an extensive strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia.
People-to-people exchanges, trade and economic cooperation between the two countries also changed during the period when Mr. Doan Xuan Hung was ambassador. In 2011, it was estimated that about 7,000 Vietnamese people went to work in Japan, but by 2015, the number of workers going to Japan had reached 30,000 people/year.
Japan and Vietnam established relations in 1973. Many activities have been held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year 2023./.
