Japan's Transport Ministry has warned Japan Airlines Co. (JAL) to improve its safety record, expressing concern that a series of recent incidents involving the airline's aircraft could lead to a serious accident.

The transport ministry's warning comes just days after a JAL A350 collided with the wing of another JAL plane at Tokyo's Haneda airport. None of the 328 people on board the Sapporo-bound flight were injured, but the flight was eventually cancelled.

In another incident earlier in May, another JAL-operated plane waiting to take off at Fukuoka Airport in southwestern Japan crossed the stop line without permission, forcing the J-Air Corp. plane to abort its takeoff.

The warning poses a major challenge for CEO Mitsuko Tottori, who took office in April. JAL’s first female CEO has pledged to prioritize customer safety following a collision between one of the airline’s planes and a Japan Coast Guard plane at Haneda Airport in January. All 379 people on board the JAL A350 were safely evacuated, but five members of the Japan Coast Guard died.

Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism asked JAL to report to the ministry on June 11 on measures being taken to prevent the risk of similar incidents recurring.

Speaking to reporters at the ministry after a meeting with aviation officials, Tottori said the company would step up efforts to improve safety. She pledged that JAL would investigate the cause of the incident and come up with solutions to prevent a recurrence.
